Do these books have to be read in their diskworld order?

Nicholas Boyson I have read the Discworld books in series, however I think you can read the sub series in each of their order. However I have noticed, especially later in the series, there are always references that happened in the earlier books, even outside of the sub series but they don't have impact on the story.
James Alday There are various reading order guides floating around, this one has multiple translations and is worth a look:
Carolyn I recently came across "The Discworld Reading Order Guide 3.0" (graphic) and was surprised to see a note on it saying "According to the author, you should start HERE" pointing at "Sourcery"!

I've been rereading the series, in publishing order.
Petr I dont think so, there are some puns from other books but nothing that would spoil it for you. I am reading the series - Witches + Tiffany Aching and right now I am finishing the Watch series. Just follow the order in the sub series of Discworld, no need to follow the order of the whole Discworld, in my opinion.
Herenya Wilkey Yes! Or else you will not know the characters or references to other events.
