Taimur Abdaal asked David M. Gross:

Thanks for your review of Macintyre's After Virtue! What was your process of synthesising the book into such a concise summary? Did you just type that out stream-of-consciousness style after finishing the book, or were you deliberately summarising things as you went along, or what? Asking because I recently tried to summarise the book and I realised how hard it is. Thanks!

David M. Gross I realized while reading it that I was getting really into it and so I decided to take notes as I was going. By paraphrasing an author or by writing down my own reactions and musings as I go, I remember things better and generally have a more productive Book Experience. By the time I got to the end of that process I had enough notes to turn into this ginormous book review / summary, though one that's probably unbalanced towards the aspects of the book that I found most engaging.
