By far, the best translation I have read is by Theo Cuffe. I have read excerpts of the original version in French and by my understanding they are very close. This translation provides the same wit and fearless poignancy that the original French does.

I read two versions, one by John Butts and another by Tobias Smollett.
I believe Smollett's was more closer to the original, but a bit more difficult to understand.
John Butts was easier to read, but it wasn't as close to the original. He left out details or changed them to make them more relatable to a modern reader.
