It could absolutely be read as a stand-alone book. It has an actual ending and you could just stop here if you didn't want to commit to a series.

Nope... but it is book about Wes' story. The next book is about Gabe's story and I liked that one even better. But you have to read the first book before Toxic or you might be a little lost.
