Best tactic or words of wisdom to cope with the utter slowness that is the publishing world?

Chuck Wendig Write more.

See, here's the trick: publishing is slow, but it picks up as you gain a little steam in your career. In the earlier interstitial spaces when you're playing that least exciting of games, THE WAITING GAME, just write more. Because that gives you more ammunition for your Word Cannon when the time comes that publishers say, "Hey, that other thing worked for us: what else you got?"

And, some of that work? Publish it in your own. That'll keep a trickle-or-flow of interest and income in the meantime.

In the interim of all that: travel, live life, enjoy it, have new experiences. Because you also need new stuff to write about, and Capital-L-Life will give you new things to fuel your penmonkeying.
