Is it a novel or a work of non-fiction? I have seen evidence on both accounts from various sources so can someone clarify?

Jester It is a book of ideas that does not fit neatly into the categories of novel or non-fiction. As a philosophical work, it is not the traditional essay. It is full of symbolism, so subsequent readings are beneficial, though the first time is special. Nietzsche does not want to persuade anyone into any system of belief. This work is an action, something to be witnessed. He wants his work of art to dance.
Mary It is definitely NOT a fully developed novel in the current sense of that word. It is not a work of "non-fiction" either. It would be best to think of it as an extended allegorical story or parable.
Gypsy Heart each 'chapter' is an idea/concept. then he uses parables to build those ideas
Benjamin Brian Leiter (noted Nietzsche scholar) says that this is meant to be an epic poem in the style of Homer or even the Bible. He's also keen to stress that it is a parody and more knowing than people give it credit for.
