I agree with Richard. Not strictly necessary, but the read is richer for taking them in order. I also found that my brain placed the historical context more vividly than if I were reading randomly.

It's not strictly necessary. There are occasional references to events in the earlier books, but nothing that's crucial to understanding the plot of this one. But every one of them is well worth a read.

I've been reading them in order, but Sansom gives just enough recap, gracefully, that head scratchers from the past are explained in each book so it wouldn't be difficult to follow along. Having said that, there's some development of character, plot lines and events, as well as relationships, that are better appreciated if the books are read in order. There's a lot of historical context in each.
