In Annihilation, I noticed a lot of symbolic references to different levels of the psyche. Was this intentional, or am I reading too much into your story?

Stuff like that tends to come out of the subconscious, so I recognize there's a lot of things in Annihilation that come out in the subtext, and all you can do as a writer is get a sense of these things and either cut stuff you don't like that's resonating or enhance it.

When you're writing strange and mysterious worlds like Area X, are you discovering them and the secrets behind them as you write (almost as if you're an expedition member)? Or do you have it all thought out and plotted before you begin?

I often look at the world and wondering how an intelligent being from "somewhere else" would view things. I find this enjoyable and based on your writing I would imagine you do too. When I voice my observations people look at me like I am an alien. Reading your work makes me think in even newer and weirder ways. Thank you. And, in your opinion, what is the true value of weirdos in modern society?
