Cármen Veloso asked this question about Unfinished Tales:
My friends, I have on my shelf The story of Kullervo, The silmarillion, The children of Húrin, The hobbit, the trilogy of The lord of the rings and Unfinished tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth. In what order should I read them? Am I missing any book in the series?

It provides a lot of useful information which explains the events to come. The Children of Hurin should follow. The two will give you the working knowledge you'll need to tackle the more familiar stories: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. You'll have a great base at this point and can fill in the gap with The Unfinished Tales.

If at this point you are still desiring more Tolkien the next obvious choices are The Book of Lost Tales and The History of Middle-Earth. Both are offered in multiple volumes. (less)
