The name Fone Bone is a direct reference to a name used by MAD Magazine cartoonist Don Martin back in the day. It's more of an homage that has completely overshadowed the original (admittedly obscure) reference.

I believe I read somewhere that Jeff Smith's first character of the Bone series had a face that looked like a phone- thus he named him "Fone" Bone.

Did it occur to you that it may have been intentional on the author's part? Phoney is Fone's foil. Also, despite the high fantasy setting, the Bones are whimsical, cartoonish characters. Does it bother you that Huey, Dooey, and Luey Duck have similar names? How about Mickey and Minnie Mouse?
Sometimes authors just have to pick names, but a good author chooses names with purpose. If ever a character's name seems like an odd choice, ask yourself why the author would do that.

Phoney is because he's, well, a phoney. Fone because the phone thing, yeah. (like Nicole said, only I added one. lol oh well)

Phoney bone is called that because he's fake most of the time but I don't know what Fone means. When I first read it I was really confused about which one was which and when I talked about Fone bone it was usually mistaken for phoney bone. So yeah, it's kind of annoying.
