Rebecca Suzanne asked Chuck Wendig:

What do you think about websites like Harper Collins authonomy? I struggle finding people to help me read and edit my work, but I've been on that site a year and it feels like a depressing, murky popularity contest. Do you think it is worth is to find a professional editor instead? Is it true that agents run away if you use a comma wrong in your query?

Chuck Wendig Beta readers and non-professional edits can have value, but it's worth noting that they can also go the other way.

A professional editor is a safer bet (though even there you're not guaranteed anything). Vet your pro editors. Check their references. Talk to them. See if you're a good fit!
