Jim asked:

Is it true the Dutch version is noticeably different from the US version? I have heard that the Dutch (original) is much different, and the US version has substantial variations... Just askin' :)

Rob Kuijer I have just finished reading the Dutch version. I have to say the differences with the english translation are remarkably subtle. The location is different, names have been altered to be more American. Jolanda becomes Jocelyn for instance. And the historical setting is also slightly different. After all Beek was occupied by the germans during world war II whereas america had no such issues. Perhaps in chapter 6 where Katharina's history is explained to Burt and Bammy Delarosa (Bert en Jasmine van Aerendonck in the original.) you will encounter the most differences. But for the overall story it hardly makes a difference.

As for the american lingo, the dutch youth has a tendency to simply copy that. So hardly any translation is even required. For example two sentences from the "disclaimer" of chapter 4:
ENG: "Only discuss content IRL, not via Skype"
NL: "Inhoud alleen IRL bespreken, niet via Skype,..."

NL:“we-have-not-administered-such-punishment-since-1932, LICGAS*
ENG: "dat-hebben-we-als sinds-WWII-niet-meer-toegepast", LIC GAS)

I know people have been asking after the ending of the dutch version. Which is supposedly different from the english. But unfortunately the second edition of the Dutch version uses the same ending as the English. I haven't found the first print yet.

So in conclusion, your really not missing anything in the translation. I agree with the authors decision to change the setting. It helps the narrative.
