A.M. Sommers If this book were required reading for couples, the divorce rate would go down.
Deborah Allin No I love it and think it is a great read. I listened to a You Tube talk with de Botton and am so glad I did. He shows such a nuanced understanding of the psychological dynamics of relationships.
Amy Hamilton I think the book definitely gave an insight into becoming more understanding of difficult behaviour from a partner. We have to obviously be careful to not confuse being understanding and justifying abusive behaviour but I think overall the message was very good.
Anne-marie Sims Definitely, it gave me perspective of different actions and behaviours during a relationship that can so easily become blurred and misinterpreted when you are involved.
YaseminReads It is, indeed. Despite the cultural differences, I found many explanations and useful information. The best part that opened the doors to my own experience is the one about anxious attachment and avoidant attachment....
E.Lurie Yes. Wish I had read it before I married. Now, a widow and in my 70's I realized too late, into my marriage that romantic expectations on both our parts were putting a destructive strain on our relationship.
Rube Yeah! And I think it was an amazing "how-to".
Steph Parry It was required reading for a training I am taking for love coaching using Somatic principles. It was, by far, the most helpful text I read for the training. So readable and relatable.
Mahdis I think so!!!!!
R.A. Dalkey Absolutely! Also, you feel the 'open relationship' question hanging in the air at certain points here. It would be interesting to hear de Botton's thoughts on that. He frames jealousy as an irrational but inevitable consequence of adultery in the context of wedding vows...probably true...but doesn't touch on how that would be affected if there were a different agreement from the very start...
