Have you tried All Quiet on the Western Front?by Erich Maria Remarque? It’s told From the
point of view of a young German soldier during WWI. Some scenes are pretty Grafik but believable, the author did serve in that war.

I expect the person who asked this has left school by now, but if anyone else has the same question, a fairly easy read that looks at some of these issues is First Casualty, by Ben Elton. There’s a poet in that one too.
And for a very appealing character with shell shock there’s Queenie’s father-in-law in Small Island, by Andrea Levy. Both very good books as well.
