    Meša Selimović
“Postoje tri velike strasti: alkohol, kocka i vlast.
    Meša Selimović, The Fortress

“You know, he said, “this design begins to appeal to me after all. Sea slugs aren’t the least bit arousing, but logarithms . . . I’ve always thought that word sounded splendidly naughty. He let it roll off his tongue with ribald inflection. “Logarithm. He gave an exaggerated shiver. “Ooh. Yes and thank you and may I have some more.

“Lots of mathematical terms sound that way. I think it’s because they were all coined by men. ‘Hypotenuse is downright lewd.

‘Quadrilateral brings rather carnal images to mind.

She was silent for a long time. Then one of her dark eyebrows arched. “Not so many as ‘rhombus.

Good Lord. That word was wicked. Her pronunciation of it did rather wicked things to him. He had to admire the way she didn’t shrink from a challenge, but came back with a new and surprising retort. One day, she’d make some fortunate man a very creative lover.”
Tessa Dare, A Week to be Wicked

“Anyhow, she went on, “so long as my mother forced me to embroider, I insisted on choosing a pattern that interested me. I’ve never understood why girls are always made to stitch insipid flowers and ribbons.
“Well, just to hazard a guess . . . Colin straightened his edge. “Perhaps that’s because sleeping on a bed of flowers and ribbons sounds delightful and romantic. Whereas sharing one’s bed with a primeval sea snail sounds disgusting.
Her jaw firmed. “You’re welcome to sleep on the floor.
“Did I say disgusting? I meant enchanting. I’ve always wanted to go to bed with a primeval sea snail.”
Tessa Dare, A Week to be Wicked

“Ah, Evie, she heard him say softly, “I must have a heart, after all…because right now it aches like the devil.

“Only your heart? she asked ingenuously, making him laugh.

He lowered her to the bed, his eyes sparkling wickedly. “Also a few other things, he conceded. “And as my wife, it’s your duty to ease all my aches.”
    Lisa Kleypas, Devil in Winter

    Julia Quinn
“An eternity later, they reached what he thought might be the end, and King Henry waved his turkey leg in the air, loudly proclaiming, “This land shall be mine, henceforth and forevermore!
And indeed, it seemed that all was lost for the poor, sweet shepherdess and her strangely changeable flock. But just then, there was a mighty roar
“Is there a lion? Richard wondered.
—and the unicorn burst onto the scene!
“Die! the unicorn shrieked. “Die! Die! Die!
Richard looked to Iris in confusion. The unicorn had not thus demonstrated an ability to speak.
Henry’s scream of terror was so chilling, the woman behind Richard murmured, “This is surprisingly well acted.
Richard stole another look at Iris; her mouth was hanging open as Henry leapt over a cow and ran behind the piano, only to trip over the littlest sheep, who was still licking the piano leg.
Henry scrambled for purchase, but the (possibly rabid) unicorn was too fast, and it ran headfirst (and head down) toward the frightened king, plunging its horn into his large, pillowed belly.
Someone screamed, and Henry went down, feathers flying.
“I don’t think this was in the script, Iris said in a horrified whisper.”
Julia Quinn, The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy

    Julia Quinn
“I must protest. “To whom? That seemed to flummox him. “I don’t know, he finally said. “But a protest must be lodged nonetheless. “I don’t think the dog meant to shoot him, Iris demurred. “You mean the author does not make the canine’s motivations clear? Iris assumed a scrupulously even expression. “Even she lacks such talent.”
Julia Quinn, The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy

    “Reading brings us unknown friends”
    Honore de Balzac

    Colleen McCullough
“There is a legend about a bird which sings just once in its life, more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. From the moment it leaves the nest it searches for a thorn tree, and does not rest until it has found one. Then, singing among the savage branches, it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And, dying, it rises above its own agony to outcarol the lark and the nightingale. One superlative song, existence the price. But the whole world stills to listen, and God in His heaven smiles. For the best is only bought at the cost of great pain Or so says the legend.”
    Colleen McCullough, The Thorn Birds

    Lisa Kleypas
“I-I’m not making advances, she told him as she flattened herself against his chest. “You’re just an available s-source of heat.

“So you say, St. Vincent replied lazily, tucking the quilt more tightly around them both.

“However, during the past quarter hour you’ve been fondling parts of my anatomy that no one’s ever dared to touch before.

“I v-very much doubt that. She burrowed even further into the depths of his coat, and added in a muffled voice, “You’ve probably been h-handled more than a hamper at Fortnum and Mason.”
    Lisa Kleypas, Devil in Winter
