Thank you for being there, for putting up with me.â€� By that point I wasn’t laughing anymore. “Thank you for keeping me from being another of Stefan’s sheep—I’ll take pack over that any day. Thank you for making the tough calls, for giving me time.â€� I stood up and walked to him, leaning against him and pressing my face against his shoulder.

“Thank you for loving me.�

“He stepped back with exaggerated courtesy. But when I walked past him, he swatted my rump. Hard enough to sting.
“You need to be more careful,� he growled. “Keep interfering in my business and you might get hurt.�
I said sweetly as I continued to Jesse's room, “The last man who swatted me like that is rotting in his grave.�
“I have no doubt about it.â€� His voice was more satisfied then contrite.”

“Yes,â€� I told him. “I think the guy playing the Pirate King was awesome.â€�

He stopped where he was.

“What?� I asked, frowning at the big smile on his face.

“I didn’t say I liked the Pirate King,� he told me.

“Oh.� I closed my eyes—and there he was. A warm, edgy presence right on the edge of my perception. When I opened my eyes, he was standing right in front of me.
“Cool,� I told him. “You’re back.�

He kissed me leisurely. When he was finished, I was more than ready to head home. Fast.

“So,â€� he said, shaking his head. “I’m too much for you. You should have said something. We might be married, Mercy, but no still means no.â€�

I widened my eyes at him. “I just haven’t wanted to hurt your feelings.�

“When I give you that little nudge, hmm?� His voice took on a considering air. “Come to think of it, I’m feeling a little nudge coming on right now.�

“Now?� I whispered in horrified tones. I looked up toward Jesse’s room. “Think of the children.�

He tilted his head as if to listen, then shook it. “They won’t hear anything from there.� He started slowly down the stairs.

“Think of Darryl, Zack, Lucia, and Joel,� I said earnestly. “They’ll be scarred for life.�

“You know what they say about werewolves,� he told me gravely, stepping down to the ground.

I broke and ran—and he was right on my tail. Figuratively speaking, of course. I don’t have a tail unless I’m in my coyote shape.”

“When we got to the moron who was sitting in the only path to the stairway, Adam caught my waist and lifted me over before stepping over the man himself.

“Unless someone shoots you, skins you, and throws the results on the floor, I don’t want to see you lying in the walkway again.�

“What?â€� he asked, finishing the second of his nine-ounce steaks, medium rare. “Why are you looking at me that way?â€�

I sighed theatrically, resting my chin on my cupped hands and bracing my elbows on the table. “You are too gorgeous, you know?�

I said it just loud enough that the people who’d been watching us surreptitiously could hear me.

Unholy laughter lit his eyes—telling me he’d been noticing the looks we’d been getting. But his face was completely serious, as he purred, “So. Am I worth what you paid for me, baby?�

I loved it when he played along with me.
I sighed again, a sound that I drew up from my toes, a contented, happy sound. I’d get him back for that “baby.� Just see if I didn’t.

“Oh, yes,� I told our audience. “I’ll tell Jesse that she was right. Go for the sexy beast, she told me. If you’re going to shell out the money, don’t settle.�

He threw back his head and laughed until he had to wipe tears of hilarity off his face. “Jeez, Mercy,� he said. “The things you say.� Then he leaned across the table and kissed me.

A while later he pulled back, grinned at me, and sat back in his chair.

I had to catch my breath before I spoke. “Best five bucks I ever spent,â€� I told him fervently.”

“Kelly looked at the cop, then sighed. “What a cluster. I take it you haven’t been killing young women and leaving their half-eaten bodies in the desert?â€�
Adam was ticked. I could tell it even if he was looking like a reasonably calm businessman. Adam’s temper was the reason he wasn’t one of Bran’s werewolf poster boys. When angered, he often gave in to impulses he wouldn’t otherwise have given in to.
“Sorry to disappoint you,� Adam told Kelly in silky tones. “But I prefer rabbits. Humans taste like pork.� And then he smiled. Kelly took an involuntary step backward.
Tony gave Adam a sharp look. “Let’s not make things worse, if we can help it, gentlemen.”

“Argued with your back-fence neighbor,â€� Adam said, his voice very gentle.
“And watched him when he wasn't looking,� I agreed. “Because every once in a while, especially after a full moon hunt, he'd forget that I could see in the dark, and he'd run around naked in the backyard.�
He laughed silently. “I never forgot you could see in the dark,â€� he admitted.”

I shook my head, and he sighed. “That’s good.�
I raised my eyebrow. He grinned, tiredly. “That would have been useful, Mercy. And having something freaky and useful would have been too good and sent the spirits of evil gods on our tail.�
I stared at him.”
