“...I grow
snakes for
hair to hold
the venom
secreted
from this
heart loaded
too heavily
with all
they hate
about themselves and if
they hiss
it's only because
like any monster I've
long since
lost
my own
right
to scream"
- from "Medusa", Reduction Fired”

“I was built like this, a chameleon in essence, and I naturally become my environments. To that extent, to be or not to be? Wait, let me rephrase. What be the thing I’m bred to be? The two conditions of my humanity, my invisible and my biology, take shape according to my realities, and regrettably, in a world built by shepherd-less egos, half of me hibernates.”

“Like a Shakespearean tragedy, tragically, I was cast into an artificial realm that practices deliberate deception without the knowledge of what I be, how I be, and my natural information absorbing ability.”

“Answer me this my fellow humans—are we really on this earth to work an eight-hour shift, to have the productions of our blood and labour taken, to live pay-cheque to pay-cheque while balancing on a line of credit, to give forty years to a mortgaged existence, to sweat for the system when the financial chains will remain regardless, and to thirst strictly for the weekends?”

“Like a snowflake that never melts—like a tornado that doesn’t swirl—like a lightning bolt fashioned in the workshop of an angel—the soul is more. The true “Iâ€ is built as a demi-god.”

“Love God and love all God’s creations. If you’re lucky, The Source will send The Spirit. Sat Guru truthfully teaches and can activate The Word within. The Word’s resonance allows the “Iâ€ to experience the absolute reality. Through the mind of a mystic, union with The Great Architect can be achieved. A permanent love, in the truest sense, can soak through to every gene and every inch of a person’s being. Salvation can be yours, and the first step is to be.”

“If born amongst diamonds, a person will translate and shine. If born orbiting, a person will translate and rise. If born in the air, a person will translate and fly. But born to the artificial hardships of the 21st century and the upside-down popular beliefs, a person is simply passing time before they die.
The temperament of the human creature is to become and to befall the environments around her or him. This is a truth no woman or man can outrun. Can someone please tell those who rule the manmade world? The human has the potential of a demi-god.”

“I’ve searched high and low for the remedy to enter me. I’ve searched high and low for the right frequency to be with me. I searched high to light my mind and energy. I searched low to know the dark in me.
All this I did for harmony. All this I did for the immortal me. All this I did and found I have stardust in my shoes, yellow in New Orleansâ€ blues, water on the moon, and inside me, the primal celestial tune.”

“On this particular page of tomorrow’s history, ideal conditions only half be, and sadly, I’ll never see the places my dreams see. My mortal deficiencies prevent me from sitting with Guru Gobind’s Warrior-Poets and Plato’s Philosopher-Kings.
Nothing is gained by wanting social change. In today’s day and age, against the grain, the trolls of suffering and pain become friends and enemies. But what else am I to do? It’s the furthermost purpose. Besides, I’m forever built like this. It’s in my cultural genetics—genes designed behind a veil of ignorance and given by the Khalsa’s consciousness. One ally and it’s the Universe. Check the history, an anomaly. Starry-eyed and standing. I ask—is anyone else with eyes starry?”

“Perhaps, I’ve lost my senses. Maybe, I tripped and bumped my head against the ivory tower and knocked myself unconscious. Or perhaps, this is the nuance of the infamous. Or maybe, this is the plight of the good-hearted.”

“This idea of a life-long mortgage doesn’t make sense. Why? Well, my life is worth more than half an acre with a structure on it. Without hesitation, I’m willing to give a decade. Perhaps then, enough youth with remain to experience the one life and the one world.”

“Hear the words of a hater and listen to the thorns. Yet, move up-close and experience the fragrance of a rose. I am Mike Bhangu.”

“How was your sleep?" Ellie asked as she poked tiny holes into the dirt with her index finger.
When Jonathan didn't reply, Ellie glanced up and saw his haunted expression. That he was lost in a pocket of evil memories, was evident.”

“J'ai vu l'éclipse totale d'une orange qu'on a retrouvée par la suite à demi-nue dans du mercure. J'ai aussi vu des corps immortels se liquéfier sur la place publique en apprenant la nouvelle de leur propre mort. J'ai aperçu au loin des volcans cracher de la moutarde. J'ai vu des parachutistes faire collision avec des oiseaux déréglés. J'ai vu bien des choses mais franchement non, je ne les ai pas vues, tes lunettes.”

“He hit a local café just one street over and down from his place, ordered a coffee, and tried to draw something on a sketchpad. Nothing came to mind. Time passed more quickly than he'd imagined. On taking a sip of his coffee, he wondered if he should’ve cut to the chase and ordered iced coffee in the first place. He felt restless all of a sudden.
“Down to the beach!”

“Meenoo decided this was a good moment to remind his human staff that he was missing something in his life. Eileen and Katy's eyes were on each other when Meenoo jumped up onto the table, giving them both a start. He went to Eileen and put his left front paw on the paper she was holding in her hand, lowering it to the table: He'd chosen which human was going to have the privilege of feeding him.
“Frickin' fleabag, muttered Eileen.
Katy tried to conceal a smile.
“Ah, but you're so cuteâ€, said Eileen, rubbing him under his chin.”

“Off to the immediate left of the garage was a dead-end road down where the parents of one of her exes lived. She wondered if Aidan had returned at any point, perhaps, like her, even to boomerang home for a bit. She also wondered if she was projecting.
“Probably nowhere near Hatzquiam.
If she had been curious enough about passing by Aidan's parents' place, then it must have been brief enough that she decided, like waiting for Vince to show up, that it wasn't worth the time. Being curious was fine, but she didn't feel like venturing down a dead-end road.”

“She put the letter down on the table, choosing to ignore it. After three seconds, she glanced at the letter and picked it up again, re-reading it and giving the event a bit more thought. She smiled little-wicked before putting it back in her bag.
The Eventual Novelist looked directly at her, bee-lined to her table, stopped stock-still, and said, “Whatever it is, don't be like me and put it off, before scurrying back to his table to do whatever he was doing before.
Seanna decided that it was to time to drink up and go home.”

“She will leave me.
It’s six AM. Breakfast for one. Eggs, sunny-side-up, like the morning outside; two-cheese English muffin, melting in the toaster oven; already humid outside; coffee will be a little bitter today, no matter how much sweetener gets put in it. The OJ will stay in the fridge my stomach can do without the citric acid bombardment this morning.
She will pack her things and leave me.
Coffee brews. Radio station plays then breaks from classical music, telling me what's already evident about the weather.
She will complain that she cannot get along with me.
Eggs pop and sizzle as the news comes on.”

“They talked about this novelty called “e-mailâ€ and the Pine System, only available at institutes of higher learning and some libraries. Marcus got his first e-mail address recently but Aidan had gotten his three years earlier, so Marcus considered Aidan “a veteranâ€. Marcus mentioned that his college had warned its students that e-mail was for “research purposes onlyâ€.
“Yeah, we all laughed at that, too, quipped Aidan. “But just a word of warning: Don't get too much into newsgroups or IRC, or you'll wonder where the last 24 hours went.
“What’s “IRC?
“’Internet Relay Chatâ€. It’ll be the end of us allâ€, joked Aidan.”

“Her light brown hair fell in the way that he liked, in a single braid that snaked down the back of her dress. Her dark-green silk skirt complimented his tunic and set off her deep blue eyes nicely. Such eyes any man in love could easily get lost in.”

“Reaching his bedroom door, Llywelyn opened it and went inside. Sitting by the fire was his man-servant Olan, busy cleaning one of his many surcoats. A smallish man, Olan made up for his lack of height with a muscular body. His short black hair, and deep-set lake blue eyes, seemed to see everything, giving him an-other-worldly appearance. This ability to see through any situation had come in handy more than once over the years.”

“As the royal party moved through the streets, one of the young street urchins darted up to Lord Owain, the eldest son of Lord Gruffudd, and attempted to slip his hand into his pocket. Owain quickly grabbed the boy and shook him roughly. “Have some respect,â€ he snapped.
Hearing the altercation, Gruffudd turned his head and smiled at the boy. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a coin, tossing it to the boy.
“Run along now and remember to have more respect for your superiors in the future, he said, giving him a cuff to the arm. The boy, red-faced nodded his head in thanks and ran back into the crowd.
“Why did you do that? Owain asked.
“Because now he will go on his way and not bother us again, Gruffudd explained.
Owain simply shook his head in disgust, and with a surly look towards the crowd, rubbed his hands on his tunic. The boy’s clothing had been so filthy that he could feel the dirt coating his fingers.”

“Moving slowly and silently as she always had when entering this house, Lynn made her way into the living room. Or what she’d remembered as the living room. As she looked around, the only things left were the cracked and peeling paint and the blackout curtains made obsolete by boarding the property. Lynn closed her eyes and took a deep breath of the dusty air to settle her feelings.”

“She saw the ghosts of her family home around her moving around in the dust and the light. To her right, a dining room full of people celebrating. In front of her, a figure in the kitchen seemed to be preparing meals. The old piano to her left was occupied by someone singing and playing. She shook her head and blinked fast as everything faded away. Lynn wondered if it was all in her head or if ghosts were really in the house. She blinked again, and their silhouettes disappeared.”

“Pilar peered out her window at the barren foothills shroud in mist and shadows cast by low-lying clouds. Bits of brush and the grey skeletons of dormant plants protruded from mounds of snow. A Canadian Pacific train, the colour of rust, slowly ran parallel to the highway.”

“Around her the world stopped. Everything other than life and death dissolved in the background. In that moment, it was only her touching the pale, waxen skin of a relative stranger.”

“Night cloaked the sky. Venus hovered overhead surrounded by traces of stars. The temperature must have dropped, as tears stung Ada’s eyes. She wiped them away with a bare hand. She hadn’t bothered with her gloves or her hood. There was no need to. As Ada navigated across the cul-de-sac, towards her home, silhouetted against the night, she felt no cold. She felt nothing at all.”
