“But...what if I mistime it?"
Gilan smiled widely. "Well, in that case, I'll probably lop your head off your shoulders."

Horace and Gilan”

“What about you three, where are you going?"
Even before Halt answered, Will knew what he was going to say. But that didn't make it any less terrifying or blood-chilling when the words were said.
"We're going after the Kalkara.”

“Mind yourself in that guardroom," Gilan told him. Thorn grinned cheerfully. He never had any stomach butterflies before a fight. "I plan to be subtle," he said.
Gilan looked at him, his head tilted curiously. "How's that?"
"Once we go through that door, I'll bash anything that moves. And if they don't move, Stig will bash them."
"You have a strange concept of subtle," Gilan said.
Thorn's grin grew wider, "So I've been told.”
John Flanagan, Slaves of Socorro

“Hal: "...Then we'll leave in a huff, taking you with us."
"I've always wanted to travel in a huff," Ingvar mused. "It sounds very comfortable. I imagine they're well padded."
"Lined with feathers, in fact," Gilan put in.”

“What now?" Lydia asked. "I assume we have a plan B?"
He shook his head. "We're way past plan B," he told her. "And we've gone past plan C as well. We're up to plan D now."
"And what's plan D?"
He jerked his head down the alley to the corner. "Anyone comes round that corner, we shoot them."
She pursed her lips critically. "Doesn't sound too ingenious," she said.
He shrugged. "I'm not good at ingenious. I'm good at dangerous.”

“Gilan,鈥 she said, 鈥測ou鈥檙e looking well.鈥 And apart from those wrinkles, he was.
He smiled at her. 鈥淎nd you grow more beautiful every day, Pauline,鈥 he replied.
鈥淲hat about me?鈥 Halt said, with mock severity. 鈥淒o I grow more handsome every day? More impressive, perhaps?鈥
Gilan eyed him critically, his head to one side. Then he announced his verdict.
鈥淪cruffier,鈥 he said.
Halt raised his eyebrows. 鈥溾€橲cruffier鈥?鈥 he demanded.
Gilan nodded. I鈥檓 not sure if you鈥檙e aware of recent advances in technology, Halt,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut there a wonderful new invention called scissors. People use them for trimming beards and hair.鈥
鈥淲丑测?鈥
Gilan appealed to Pauline. 鈥淪till using his saxe knife to do his barbering, is he?鈥
Pauline nodded, slipping her hand inside her husband鈥檚 arm. 鈥淯nless I can catch him at it,鈥 she admitted. Halt regarded them both with a withering look. They both refused to wither, so he abandoned the expression.
鈥淵ou show a fine lack of respect for your former mentor,鈥 he told Gilan.
The younger man shrugged. 鈥淚t goes with my exalted position as your commander.鈥
鈥淣ot mine,鈥 Halt said. 鈥淚鈥檝e retired.鈥
鈥淪o I can expect little in the way of deference from you?鈥 Gilan grinned.
鈥淣o. I鈥檒l show proper deference鈥.the day you train your horse to fly back around the castle鈥檚 turrets.”
John Flanagan, The Royal Ranger

“A foolish way to get around." Hal smiled. "If the gods had meant us to ride horses, they never would have given us ships.”

“Halt nodded his thanks.
"Good work," he said, and Gilan grinned at the praise. Must remember to do that more often, Halt thought. He recalled his own younger days, when words of praise were few and far between...”
