“Before you call yourself a Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu or any other theology, learn to be human first.”

“You used to be able to tell the difference between hipsters and homeless people. Now, it's between hipsters and retards. I mean, either that guy in the corner in orange safety pants holding a protest sign and wearing a top hat is mentally disabled or he is the coolest fucking guy you will ever know.”

“I thought that if I owned nothing, had nothing, was nothing, I would have nothing left to lose, and I wouldn't be scared anymore. Because my whole life I鈥檝e been so damn scared. Scared to live because I was scared to die. But at the same I was so scared of living, so I wanted to die. Or maybe so scared of dying that I refused to live. You don't have to be afraid to fall, when you're already on the ground. You don't have to be scared to lose someone, when there's no one around to lose.”

“He kept his head down in what seemed to be a prayer. 鈥淗e counts. You鈥檝e smiled at him four hundred and forty-six times as of a few minutes ago. He announces the number every time I see him.”

“Between shortage and absolute poverty an ocean of shades and gradations do emerge on the scale of deficiency. Be that as it may, each stage must find a mode to leave a door ajar for the sun to peer in and human warmth to radiate. ( " Homeless down in the corner")”

“Let them not be denied a few crumbs of attention or merely a 'twinkle of happiness' if, through the insidious intrusion of reality, the unattended cannot receive a 'lease of happiness.' ("Homeless, down in the corner" )”

“He moved to her earlobe and breathed, 鈥淔irst, I will blow, then I will lick, last I will bite.鈥 Blake took his time blowing an elaborate pattern on her stomach, and Livia was pretty sure he鈥檇 spelled the word torture.”

“Livia held her spatula as Blake whispered in her ear. 鈥淚 see us just like this a hundred years from now, old and deaf. I鈥檒l be the luckiest man.鈥
Emotion caught her鈥攖his was all she wanted. Simple, beautiful frittata moments with this man.
鈥淪omeday, Livia, I鈥檒l be man enough to buy the food,鈥 he continued. 鈥淚鈥檒l give you an oven. I鈥檒l try so hard.”

“Hello, beautiful Livia," Blake answered.
"How did you know it was me?" Livia saw her wide smile in the rear view mirror.
"The phone looked sexier when it rang.”

“When we home in on the sidelined, we can give them a glimmer of hope. Trapped in direst conditions and stuck in the darkest corners of their being, they sense a splinter of human warmth and a flake of joy, thus escaping the anonymity enforced by their social stance. ("Homeless, down in the corner")”

“We鈥檙e going to find your hobo. We鈥檙e going to work hard鈥攚ork nights. Liv, we鈥檙e going to put our balls into it.鈥 She hugged her tightly.
鈥淲hen did we get balls?鈥 Livia loved her ridiculous sister.
鈥淛ust now.”

“What do you have there?鈥
Mouse perked up at her interest. 鈥淚鈥檓 making ski masks to have on hand for bank robberies. Last night I finished the fingerless mermaid gloves for Eve. She likes her fingers free for gunplay.鈥
Mouse鈥檚 needles clicked together in a peaceful rhythm.”

“I remember one time we were walking into a grocery store and an old man was ringing a bell for the Salvation Army. I asked my dad if we could give him some money and he told me no, that he works hard for his money and he wasn鈥檛 about to let me give it away. He said it isn鈥檛 his fault that other people don鈥檛 want to work. He spent the whole time we were in the grocery store telling me about how people take advantage of the government and until the government stops helping those people by giving them handouts, the problem won鈥檛 ever go away鈥 I believed him. That was three years ago and all this time I thought homeless people were homeless because they were lazy or drug addicts or just didn鈥檛 want to work like other people. But now I know that鈥檚 not true. Sure, some of what he said was true to an extent, but he was using the worst-case scenarios. Not everyone is homeless because they choose to be. They鈥檙e homeless because there isn鈥檛 enough help to go around. And people like my father are the problem. Instead of helping others, people use the worst-case scenarios to excuse their own selfishness and greed.”

“He gripped the edge of the desk. 鈥淚鈥檝e done my best to make sure my brothers have no blood on their hands,鈥 he said with menacing quiet. 鈥淚鈥檓 going to hell for all three of us.鈥 Beckett said defiantly.”

“Blake Hartt, I choose you. I deserve you. I want you.鈥 Livia proved it by kissing his cold lips until they were warm.”

“Eve held his eyes and confidently licked the length of the razor-sharp blade with the tip of her tongue. Red blood beaded up on her tongue, and she licked her lips, giving them a fresh coat of color. Eve used the knife to blow a kiss in Beckett鈥檚 direction and disappeared into the crowd. Beckett forgot to keep dancing. He stood stock still with Kyle still twirling around him.
Eve had just f*cked his mind so hard, he wanted to smoke a cigarette and cuddle like some soap-watching woman.”

“After soft kisses, they pressed their hands together palm to palm. The tingling scattered all over Livia's body, warming her.
"Do you feel that?" she whispered with a smile.
His lips moved in his silent count. Blake wrapped his fingers around her hand. She copied the movement. Their hands together now resembled a heart-not a cartoon rendering of the shape, but a real human heart.
He touched her lips with his and murmured, "I've been feeling it since you first smiled at me.”

“She kissed his lips and felt his smile form. Alone in this beautiful space, Blake and Livia made things right. Blake kissed her slowly and patiently, like he had all the time in the world.”

“No one has really seen me in years.鈥 Blake looked at the sky. 鈥淪ometimes I wonder how they know I don鈥檛 have a home. I try to dress decently.鈥 He waved a hand at his jeans and army jacket. 鈥淚 think it just seeps out of me. I鈥檓 not the same as everyone else.鈥 He shook his head, pulling himself out of his despair, and looked at Livia again. 鈥淏ut when you saw me for the first time, you actually saw me. You saw me, and then you smiled like I was just the same as everyone else on that platform.”

“If you think I give a rat鈥檚 ass about that cooler, you don鈥檛 know me at all. Nothing I own is worth your pain.鈥
Then, quietly, he took down one of his walls for her. 鈥淚 know you.”

“So you鈥檙e the music note, Beckett鈥檚 obviously the knife, who鈥檚 the cross?鈥 She stroked Blake鈥檚 tattoo.
鈥淵ou鈥檙e about to find out. We鈥檙e headed to church.鈥 Blake leaned in to kiss her forehead.
鈥淥f course we are. That makes perfect sense.鈥 From hell to heaven.”

“I know it doesn鈥檛 make noise,鈥 he explained. 鈥淕oing through the motions is comforting to me. I wish I had a real piano.鈥 The wistfulness in his tone was aching to hear.
鈥淒id it used to have keys on it?鈥 Livia asked.
鈥淚 did draw them once, but it was in pencil. No matter. My heart knows right where they are.鈥 He watched her as he tickled the pretend keys again.”

“A very bouncy Kyle woke Livia at some ridiculous o鈥檆lock on Friday morning.
鈥淲akey-wakey, you sloppy, old whore. It鈥檚 time to do you up. You鈥檙e going out tonight, so you don鈥檛 get to dress in nursing home casual.鈥 Kyle ripped off Livia鈥檚 covers.”

“We better get over to Beckett鈥檚 if you want to see how my day goes鈥攂efore his crowd gets too raunchy.鈥 Blake stood up and held out his hand.
鈥淚t鈥檚 eight thirty in the morning. How raunchy could they be?鈥
Livia wondered what, exactly, Beckett did for a living. Her question was soon answered. Everything bad.”

“Don鈥檛 pray to me. Don鈥檛 pray to me!鈥 Kyle said, alarmed. 鈥淲e鈥檙e in this together. I鈥檝e done things wrong too. We鈥檙e human, Cole. We鈥檒l still make mistakes, but now we鈥檒l always have each other to hold when it hurts.鈥 Kyle鈥檚 eyes filled with tears.”

“When we feel haunted, it is the pull of our own home we're experiencing, but a more upsetting possibility is that the past has become homeless, and we are offering it a place to inhabit in the present.”
