“The prior turned back to Walter.

Walter bit his lip and was silent.

“Walter, answer thou the father
prior,� urged Bartholomew, alarmed
by this diffidence. “Thou dost desire

“No, Father,� whispered the boy.

Brother Bartholomew crossed himself in horror. The prior’s face was a
curious mix of sternness and concealed mirth.
