Brandon Sanderson
“It's a mystery," Vin said, narrowing her eyes and smiling. "We Mistborn are incredibly mysterious."
Elend paused." Um...I'm Mistborn too, Vin. That doesn't make any sense."
"We Mistborn need not make sense," Vin said." It's beneath us. Come on-the sun's already down. We need to get moving.”
Brandon Sanderson, The Hero of Ages

Brandon Sanderson
“Kelsier exhaled in exasperation. 鈥淓lend Venture? You risked your life鈥攔isked the plan, and our lives鈥攆or that fool of a boy?鈥

Vin looked up, glaring at him. 鈥淵es.鈥

鈥淲hat is wrong with you, girl?鈥 Kelsier asked. 鈥淓lend Venture isn鈥檛 worth this.鈥

She stood angrily, Sazed backing away, the cloak falling the 铿俹or. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a good man!鈥

鈥淗e鈥檚 a nobleman!鈥

鈥淪o are you!鈥 Vin snapped. She waved a frustrated arm toward the kitchen and the crew. 鈥淲hat do you think this is, Kelsier? The life of a skaa? What do any of you know about skaa? Aristocratic suits, stalking your enemies in the night, full meals and nightcaps around the table with your friends? That鈥檚 not the life of a skaa!鈥

She took a step forward, glaring at Kelsier. He blinked in surprise at the outburst.

鈥淲hat do you know about them, Kelsier?鈥 she asked. 鈥淲hen鈥檚 the last time you slept in an alley, shivering in the cold rain, listening to the beggar next to you cough with a sickness you knew would kill him? When鈥檚 the last time you had to lay awake at night, terri铿乪d that one of the men in your crew would try to rape you? Have you ever knelt, starving, wishing you had the courage to knife the crewmember beside you just so you could take his crust of bread? Have you ever cowered before your brother as he beat you, all the time feeling thankful because at least you had someone who paid attention to you?鈥

She fell silent, puf铿乶g slightly, the crewmembers staring at her.

鈥淒on鈥檛 talk to me about noblemen,鈥 Vin said. 鈥淎nd don鈥檛 say things about people you don鈥檛 know. You鈥檙e no skaa鈥 you鈥檙e just noblemen without titles.鈥

She turned, stalking from the room. Kelsier watched her go, shocked, hearing her footsteps on the stairs. He stood, dumbfounded, feeling a surprising 铿倁sh of ashamed guilt.

And, for once, found himself without anything to say.”
Brandon Sanderson, Mistborn: The Final Empire

Brandon Sanderson
“What would you think if I told you that I wasn鈥檛 an Allomancer?鈥 Sazed asked.
鈥淚鈥檇 think that you were lying,鈥 Vin said.
鈥淗ave you known me to lie before?鈥
鈥淭he best liars are those who tell the truth most of the time.”
Brandon Sanderson, Mistborn: The Final Empire

Brandon Sanderson
“Kelsier smiled. 'It means that you, Vin, are a very special person. You have a power that most high noblemen envy. It is a power that, had you been born an aristocrat, would have made you one of the most deadly and influential people in all of the final empire.'
Kelsier leaned forward again. 'But, you weren't born an aristocrat. You're not noble, Vin. You don't have to play by their rules--and that makes you even more powerful.”
Brandon Sanderson, Mistborn: The Final Empire

Brandon Sanderson
“Suddenly, Vin grew pale. Elend paused, glancing at her, sensing that something was wrong. Not with what he'd said, something else. What is it? Assassins? Mist spirits? Koloss?

"I just realized something," Vin said, looking at him with those intense eyes of hers. "I can't go to a ball鈥擨 didn't bring a gown!”
Brandon Sanderson, The Hero of Ages

Brandon Sanderson
“Sometimes Vin imagined she was like the ash, or the wind, or the mist itself. A thing without thought, capable of simply being, not thinking, caring, or hurting. Then she could be...free.”
Brandon Sanderson, Mistborn: The Final Empire

Roman Payne
“Wine gives one 'ideas,' whereas champagne gives one 'strategies.”

“Because when I looked at you across that table at the diner, no one else existed. And whether or not anything happens between you and me, it took meeting you to show me what I was missing.”

“We don't want you along," Vin said. "We don't trust you - and we don't like you.”
Brandon Sanderson, The Well of Ascension

“In his old life, the answer would have been easy: He'd have just put a gun to Vin's head and dragged the fucker to the altar. Now? He needed to be a little more civilized.”
J.R. Ward, Covet

“The collision was impending and electric, but the moment was soft and sweet: She positively glowed as she looked up at him.

"What," she whispered, palming his face.
Vin took a moment to memorize her features and the way she felt beneath him, seeing her not just through his eyes, but feeling her with his skin and his heart. "Hello, lovely lady...hello.”
J.R. Ward, Covet

“But I'd like you however you were, Vin. I love you. The question is, how do you like yourself?”
Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson
“You said their prayer 鈥 is this the religion you believe in, then?"
鈥濱 believe in them all.鈥
Vin frowned. 鈥濶one of them contradict each other?鈥
Sazed smiled. "Oh, often and frequently they do. But, I respect the truths behind them all 鈥 and I believe in the need for each one to be remembered”
Brandon Sanderson, Mistborn: The Final Empire

Euripides
“Est fou, bien s没r, qui se refuse aux 诲茅濒颈肠别蝉 du vin, quand on peut dresser haut celui que je tiens l脿, palper un sein, caresser des deux mains une prairie offerte ! L'or danse et l'on oublie ses maux !”
Euripides, Cyclops

“La fe鈥 Record贸 una voz del pasado. Su propia voz, habl谩ndole a Vin aquel terrible d铆a tras la muerte de Kelsier. La fe no es solo para los bellos momentos y los d铆as felices. 驴Qu茅 es creer, qu茅 es la fe si no persistes en ella despu茅s del fracaso?”
Brandon Sanderson, The Hero of Ages

“Merry Christmas.鈥 he says quietly, pulling something from his back pocket.
I frown in confusion then smile in delight when I see what it is. It鈥檚 a shiny, sharp trowel with a holly green handle. It鈥檚 stolen from the gardens for sure. It is the single greatest gift I鈥檝e ever received.
鈥淚t鈥檚 so pretty.鈥 I whisper happily, turning it over to test its edge.
鈥淚 promised you something shiny.鈥
鈥淎nd you delivered.鈥 I press my finger against the tip then pull it back quickly. 鈥淚t鈥檚 sharp.鈥
鈥淲hy else have it, right? Keep it with you when you can. If something goes down while I鈥檓 gone I want to know you have it.鈥
I nod my head as I slip it into my back pocket. The handle sticks up but the point is hidden.
When I look up at Vin my heart skips. His eyes are sharp, intense.
鈥淐ome with me.鈥 he commands quietly.
鈥淣o.鈥 I reply immediately.
I was waiting for this. From the moment he woke me up, the second I saw his eyes, I knew. And just as quickly as I recognized it, I knew what my answer would be.
He shakes his head in disbelief. 鈥淵ou know I鈥檓 not coming back here. Not for you, not for anyone.鈥
鈥淢aybe not, but if I go with you then you definitely won鈥檛.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 not going to work, Joss.鈥 he tells me seriously. 鈥淭he Hive won鈥檛 bite. They don鈥檛 want to rock the boat with the Colonies and the pot isn鈥檛 sweet enough to convince them to try. They鈥檒l pass and everyone here is going to either stay here forever or die in a revolt.鈥
鈥淣ats included.鈥 I remind him coolly.
鈥淪he鈥檚 a big girl. She knows how it really is. She can yell at me all she wants, but she knows just as well as I do that no one will come here to help.鈥
鈥淓specially if you don鈥檛 ask.鈥
鈥淲hat the hell do you want from me?鈥 he whispers fiercely. 鈥淵ou want me to go out there and rally the troops, bring them back here riding on a tall white horse and save the day? I鈥檓 no hero. I never have been. It鈥檚 how I鈥檝e stayed alive.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 also a great way to stay alone. And if you do this, if you go and pretend we don鈥檛 exist, then I鈥檒l pretend I never knew you. Nats will too, I鈥檓 sure. You鈥檒l be nothing to no one and won鈥檛 that make life easier for you? So go on and go, you coward, and don鈥檛 ever look back because there鈥檚 nothing to look back on. You were never even here far as I鈥檓 concerned.鈥
I turn to leave him standing there in the cold beside the words I wrote to Ryan, words that have gone unnoticed and feel like nothing in the night. I鈥檓 spun around roughly and pinned against Vin鈥檚 chest. His breath is coming even and hard, sharp inhales and exhales that burst against my face leaving my skin freezing in their absence.
鈥淒on鈥檛 turn your back on me.鈥 he growls.
I can see the enforcer in him now. The hard ass who lived on the outside by the skin of his teeth and grit under his knuckles. It鈥檚 something I understand, something I can respect. Something I can relate to.
I lean closer, no longer being pulled but rather pushing against him until our faces almost touch.
鈥淣o, don鈥檛 you turn your back on me. On us.鈥 I whisper harshly, pushing at him aggressively. He lets me go and I stumble back from him.
鈥淚鈥檓 no hero.鈥 he repeats.
鈥淗ow do you know until you鈥檝e tried?鈥
* * *
鈥淵ou鈥檒l come back for us, Vin.鈥 I whisper in his ear. 鈥淚 know you will.鈥
I know no such thing, but I want it to be true and I can tell he does too so I tell him that it is. I lie to us both and I hope it makes it real.
Vin nods his head beside mine and buries his face in my shoulder. I do the same. We stand huddled together against the cold and the uncertainty of everything tomorrow will bring.”
Tracey Ward

“Je sugg猫re que tu mettes de c么t茅 une partie des sommes que tu investis 脿 fonds perdus dans l'industrie des boissons alcooliques.”
John Kennedy Toole, A Confederacy of Dunces

“Vin acept贸 la mano, tratando con toda la gracia posible de sacar del carruaje la falda de encajes de su vestido. Mientras descend铆a con cuidado, tratando de no tropezar, agradeci贸 la mano firme del criado y finalmente se dio cuenta de por qu茅 se esperaba de los hombres que ayudaran a las mujeres a salir de los carruajes. No era una costumbre tonta despu茅s de todo: lo tonto era la ropa.”

“It took you long enough to come back,鈥 Lexy tells me bitingly.
The girl is ruining my meal. Ever since the stable girls showed up, she鈥檚 been attached like glue to Vin鈥檚 side. I recognize it for what it is鈥攊nfatuation. No way Vin is leading her on. He barely tolerates her, which isn鈥檛 to say he isn鈥檛 sleeping with her, but he definitely isn鈥檛 putting pretty pictures in her head. She鈥檚 doing that all on her own.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 what he said,鈥 I grumble around a large bite of bread, gesturing to Vin.
鈥淲e were sure you鈥檇 left us to die.鈥
鈥淪orry to disappoint.鈥
鈥淒on鈥檛 be. We wouldn鈥檛 have been sorry to see you go.鈥
I look up from my plate to eye her carefully. I do it for too long. She twitches under my stare, making me grin.
鈥溾€榃e,鈥 huh? You鈥檙e a 鈥榳e鈥 now?鈥
Vin looks up sharply. 鈥淲hat? No.鈥
鈥淰in,鈥 Lexy protests.
鈥淎re you sure?鈥 I ask him.
鈥淵es,鈥 he tells me angrily. He stares Lexy down. 鈥淎nd, no, we鈥檙e not a 鈥榳e.鈥 We鈥檙e nothing.鈥
鈥淚鈥檓 sure he doesn鈥檛 mean it, Lex,鈥 I tell her consolingly. 鈥淣ever give up hope.鈥
鈥淜itten,鈥 Vin growls in warning.
Lexy shoots me an icy stare from across the table. It鈥檚 cute how hard she tries. 鈥淏e sure to watch your back out there, Kitten,鈥 she spits sarcastically. 鈥淚鈥檇 hate to see you get hurt.鈥
I put up my finger in her face, getting serious. 鈥淲atch yourself. You鈥檙e toeing a dangerous line with me right now and I don鈥檛 want to have to remind you what happened to the last girl who threatened me. Forget Vin, I鈥檒l put you to bed with Caroline. You get me?鈥
Lexy pales. She glances once at Vin, then Ryan and Trent. All of them keep their heads down, carefully pretending they have no idea what鈥檚 happening. Finally she stands slowly, turns, and leaves without a word.
鈥淲ell, that鈥檚 handy,鈥 I mumble, picking up my bread.
鈥淜inda harsh,鈥 Ryan comments.
I hate that I immediately feel a twinge of guilt just from those two words from him. 鈥淚 did him a favor,鈥 I say defensively. 鈥淭hat girl was one kiss away from collecting his hair. I don鈥檛 have time for that kind of crazy.鈥
鈥淎men to that,鈥 Vin says heartily, raising his glass to me.
鈥淐alm down, Romeo. You鈥檙e the idiot who keeps getting us into these situations.鈥
鈥溾€楿s鈥?鈥 he asks with a sly grin. 鈥淎re we an 鈥榰s鈥 now?鈥
鈥淣o,鈥 Ryan replies darkly.”
Tracey Ward

“Next time I expect you to act a little friendlier and remember that we would like to get out of here before we die.鈥
He rises to leave but I stand quickly as well, leaning over the table and shoving my finger in his face.
鈥淎nd next time you try and remember that you鈥檙e not my pimp, I鈥檓 not one of your girls and if you want my help you鈥檒l watch the way you talk to me. Understood?鈥
This is a moment in my life when I seriously wonder if I鈥檓 going to get slapped. I鈥檓 mouthing off to a Stable Boy from The Hive, a guy whose job it is to keep women in line, doing what they鈥檙e told and making the very testy, very violent men at the top of his food chain happy. He minds the coffers and the coins all have PMS. It can鈥檛 be an easy job. It could easily be one he manages with an iron fist.
His jaw works under the taught skin of his face. It clenches and releases as he chews on what I鈥檝e said. He carefully, dispassionately considers me. His calm is freaking me out. I鈥檇 rather he was yelling. I鈥檇 almost rather he hit me. Eventually what he does is smile.
鈥淯nderstood, Kitten.鈥 he replies, his voice low and rough.
His eyes bore into me with a heat that I recognize. A hunger I鈥檝e seen before.”

“Kelsier sat, trying to read her, trying to understand her. Would she betray them to the Final Empire if she left? He thought not. She wasn't a bad person.
She simply believed that everybody else was.”
