Beau Devereaux, a psychopath in the skin of a good person is dating Dawn, the twin sister of Leslie. The twins are polar opposites of each other and do not share a good relationship. In fact, Beau seems to have an alter ego - he is the polar opposite of his public self when nobody is watching him. He loves inflicting pain on others. He is rich and there's nobody to stop him from doing what he wants. Even after Leslie's warnings, Dawn remains indifferent to Beau. A lot of the story is told from his point of view which really gave me an insight into what was going inside his head that made him feel so entitled to things he wanted. If I could, I would have happily smashed his head open and put in all the sense there was and then seal it so tight he won't ever be able to go back to his previous self.
The river and the Abbey are Beau's safe places. He does what he does there. They are important places that seem to always be in the background but are pretty much at the forefront of everything that happens. And the end of the story, I did not see that coming.
This was a very unexpected story for me, very different from the kind of books I usually read. It was eerie and creepy at times but I liked it. There was a clear distinction between the good and the bad, and there seemed to be no in-between. The two prominent social issues that make the very foundation of this story are bullying and sexual harrasment, and the authors have not shied away from depicting the raw reality of our real world. The story is fast-paced and gripping, and has its share of twists and turns. Certain things caught me off guard. The character development is commendable. Very well written. Looking forward to the sequel.
There is mature content and certain things are pretty dark and disturbing so make sure to check the trigger warnings before reading this book....more

I don't want to talk much about the story because it's a short read and the synopsis is enough, but I won't miss out on mentioning that Elexis never shies away from writing the truth. She is not a reader-pleaser so people who want to read only happy things, she's not your author. She keeps things raw and real. She is excellent in what she writes and how she portrays things without sugar coating anything. Deep in my heart, I didn't want this story to end how it did, but I know for sure that's the reality. One movie that I'd like to recommend based on "if you liked reading this, watch this" trend is A Thursday available on Disney+ Hotstar. It is in Hindi and has English subtitles so if you can get a hold of it, watch it. And read this book. Short and crisp, no unnecessary plots, twists or conversations. Just to the point. Very much recommended....more

I loved the storyline, which was gripping from the very beginning. There are people dying in public places and everyone doubts that there is a serial killer. Only that there's not.
I love books with flawed characters because they are closer to reality, and this book just had that. At times, I felt sorry for the main character, Jasmine, because even if she was a mess, more mess always awaited her. She loved her brother and I felt her hatred towards her foster mother for denying insulin to him. I mean, why? Why adopt kids if this is how you are going to treat them?
This was a page turner and I would have finished it in one sitting if I didn't have to work. There was a lot of tension going throughout the story with all the twists and turns. It highlighted the failures of foster care systems and how they impact the kids. I was mostly on the edge of my seat. Definitely recommended....more
