I got as far as 143 pages, and called it quits. I think this may be the first HF book that has bored me to tears in a long time. I can’t tell you what happens in the end of this family saga, because my brain was begging me to stop. Not saying that this book may not appeal to others, but it’s just not for me. Gabriela is quite a curious character. She wants to understand her family, where she comes from, and ultimately her place within all the history. It wasn’t the past that bored me, it’s the present. I’m well aware of some of the history of Jerusalem, so I’m sure there may be some great story spun about a great grandmother, aunt or cousin, but I didn’t get far enough to find out. You may like this book very much, if you are into HF and cultural books. Maybe it was my mood, but Gabriela didn’t make me want to keep going. Her need to want her mother’s affections was not as inspiring as I thought this book would be about. Instead, she came off as this desperate, impulsive girl. This may be a case of it’s-not-you-it’s-me. I just couldn’t even begin to like this book, and those 143 pages were forced. If you want some Jewish history, you may like this book. As far as a world wind historical tale, I didn’t get that....more

This book is perfectly titled, because it is FLAWED! How can anyone like Celestine's pathetic character? This girl is so freaking naïve, that she's an embarrassment to the female population. The whole setup is stupid! Living in the world in this book is no different than a black person during segregation. The way the Flawed are treated in this book would make any sane person angry because of the similarities of real history. The only difference is there was no branding, just the color of your skin. Maybe I am a little too harsh here, but this book is just dumb. This is why I strongly believe that there is no hope for YA dystopia anymore.
I see no reason to keep going. Celestine is just not a heroine I can even begin to like. And then there's the possibility of a love triangle. I'm not sure, but this chick asks her on-the-run boyfriend, Art, to find her Flawed cellmate Carrick. When this girl chases Art because he is fed up, she loses any hope of me liking her. So. Freaking. Stupid!!!!!
I am done!!!!! And I usually don't rate books that I DNF, but Flawed deserves this one star. Sue me!...more

I know that, occasionally, I will complain about a book being too slow. Well, the pacing in this book is fast, too fast if you ask me. Right off the bat, the antagonist in this story is being exiled from her kingdom and, if I remember correctly, there’s no explanation as to why that is. It may have been something to do with magic. Her ever faithful guards follow her to her new home deep in the forest. She raises some muddbits (Looks like a rabbit & dog mixed together) to be evil like her and she sets off to the kingdom of Oz, with only one agenda; get inside and takeover, making her the new Queen of Oz. Once inside, she attacks the Queen and Glenda, stealing Glenda’s source of power. Soon, Oz isn’t green and gold anymore, it’s red and gold. The people of Oz are all fearful and hopeful at the same time, because they think that bringing Dorothy to help with the situation will free them of their new evil Queen.
I only got as far as meeting with Scarecrow. I just could not go on any longer. All of the above was achieved during the first 16% or so. All too fast and pushed together. It felt like one of those “made-up-on-the-fly bedtime stories you tell to kids. No character development to see just what the Evil Queen is all about. How she came to be Queen, nothing. Sure, that could be explained later on. But, the way this story is set up, that’s not likely to happen. It’s only 180 pages and I just couldn’t keep reading. I labeled this as Children’s/MG simply because I don’t think that anyone older would enjoy this. It’s not like The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland , where no matter the age, you love it. That’s why I wanted to read this to begin with, and I was let down by the simpleness of it. Again, don’t just take my word for it. Read on, if you so dare. But, if you are looking for an awesome retelling or reimagining, then this is not the book for you. This book has none of the brilliance that stands out like The Wonderful Wiz……. nor Alice’s Adventures…….....more

*DNF* I've been at this book for weeks and every time I pick it up, I fail to connect in any way. Argh! So frustrating!
*Update*
No matter how many times I tried to read this book, I always managed to put it down. Within 3 weeks, I only made it to 17%. It could have turned around, but I was too tired to find out. That being said, don’t take my word for it. Read on if you choose. It started out slow, too slow for my liking. Normally, that wouldn’t bother me because I always want to see where the story is heading. There wasn’t enough to keep me focused, so I called it quits.
The time travel was instantaneous, which was good. However, I was somewhat confused as to what was going on. Bridger was lost to his grief over his dad’s death. Or is his father dead? He was so caught up in getting some good playback for the mission, that he completely left his partner who is also his girlfriend unprotected. From the little that I grasped, he was supposed to have her back while out in the field. The next thing I know, his father is there in the flesh on this time travel mission, telling him to save someone named Alora. Then there’s another time jump, and we are getting Alora’s side to this story. It was just so slow and I couldn’t be bothered to find out the connections to these characters.
I really hate that I couldn’t get into this book. No matter how hard I tried, it didn’t happen. Recommend? Sure, because it may be something that you’d love. I was excited about the time travel, but because it dragged on and on, I couldn’t care less about the whys and hows of the plot and characters....more

First off, my decision to not finish this book shouldn’t hinder anyone from reading it themselves. I love historical fiction. I, however, could not get into this story no matter how hard I tried. In a month’s time, I only read 75 pages. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t say that it’s a boring read. I just could not keep reading this book without getting angry. This is me trying to brave past my own personal demons, but I just couldn’t do it.
It started out with a young Korean-American woman, dealing with the death of her adoptive mother, and her going to Korea to meet her birth mother. Mind you, she never really cared about meeting her until recently, so she and her adoptive father travel to meet the woman who gave her life. When she arrives at the place to meet her, she is informed that her birth mother passed away, and she wants to know why that information wasn’t provided before she flew all those miles to meet her. As she is leaving, she is accosted by an older Korean woman who gives her a package and a cryptic message to meet the following day, alone. From there, I gathered who the mystery woman is and the beginning of a long and painful story that lies behind an old family heirloom. As the story slowly unfolded, I just could not go any further. It was too much to take, and I tried daily to keep reading but failed miserably.
I have no clue how the rest of this story played out. I’m hoping sometime in the near future that I will be able to sit down and finish this book. Don’t let my thoughts keep you from this story. Everyone has different reactions to stories, mine just happened to be a negative one that has no bearing on the rest of this book. If you enjoy historical fiction then I say go for it. There are a myriad of Korean and Japanese proverbs within just those 75 pages that I read, so that was insightful. As I didn’t finish this book, I can’t rate it appropriately.
I could not finish this book to save my life. I really thought that I would love it, but it only seemed to infuriate me as I turned the pages. Funny hI could not finish this book to save my life.
