Her family is very poor, and it's a struggle to find the money for food and medicine, never mind school. But, Serafina is determined, and works hard in her garden, and finally has the tuition saved up. School is a privilege, and Serafina works very hard to learn French, and other things. Everyday she walks to school barefoot, and then when she gets close to school, she puts on her shoes and socks. One day as she is walking home from school, a devastating earthquake hits Haiti, and Serafina's world is turned upside down.
