Vivian made me laugh with her offbeat thoughts and there was just enough fantasy (that a goldfish could survive with a dozen lemons in the bowl) and humor (she wore her khakis and brought a toy gun for job hunting). I love stories with quirky characters that are imperfect but learn to survive without blaming others for their problems. I am one of those readers who has to like the character (more character-driven stories) and the plot is secondary. I didn't want to "fix" Vivian as one reviewer said she needed to be in therapy and on meds...NO! That would make one boring book. ...more

The book starts out with a fun premise of an old lady getting revenge on the smug doctor who ruined her life. At that point I'm with her. The woman goes to great lengths to track down the doctor, even moving nearby and concocting ruses to infiltrate his family. Her greatest problem is that he has some dementia and cannot recall his crimes. Also, he is likable, no longer the smug doctor she remembers. Fairly early in the story she abandons her plan to kill him and decides to hurt his family, thereby hurting him. Now she is just mean and I don't like her anymore. Suddenly the book wasn't funny anymore. It turned perverse. Another problem I found was that the narrator was clumsy. It felt he was omnipotent in one sentence and the next thoughts sounded like it was from the selected character for that chapter. The POV jumped around. There was too much product placement and famous people comparisons which to me felt amateurish. About halfway through the book I started getting impatient. I felt that the conversation and thoughts were unnecessary and it was like spending time with a boring person that talks too much. The only character that I ended up caring about was the old man. He had an excuse. ...more

I loved The Rosie Project and was hopeful that Don and Rosie would be just as lovable and crazy in The Rosie Effect. I was wrong. First of all, the premise is that Rosie let herself get pregnant, which is fine I guess but kind of sneaky, behind Don's back. Being 3 weeks pregnant seem to have turned her into an unlikable, uncaring, self-centered, not-too-smart witch. I felt sorry for Don. As one thing led to another I felt like Don was being attacked from all sides. Remember the Michael Douglas move The Game? Things kept getting more horrendous throughout the movie. I HATED it! That's how I felt here. I ended up speed reading through the center of the book until a solution to a problem started to form. It wasn't fun. It was annoying. I was satisfied with the ending so I gave the book 3 stars instead of 2....more

Although the handling and information about autism was good, the story was all over the place. One reviewer commented " a confusing, unfocused, quasi-mystery full of too many false leads, too many late revelations, and too many last minute characters to sustain interest and believability." My sentiments exactly!...more
