I kept reading on the hopes that it would be a quick read (which it was) and that the ending would potentially make up for the parts I hated (which for me it did, though I could understand how it wouldn't for other readers).
she describes a painful and at times despicable situation in a very honest and vulnerable way, which at times makes some of her characters extremely unlikeable. still, this also makes the story more believable, and unlike in her first couple of books at least, there is no easy scapegoat villain, or easy answer that develops in two pages. still not sure who I could specifically recommend this book to, though it's good for a general recommendation for the random library patron looking for a new not-so-much-fluff romance novel. ...more

I feel conflicted about this series the same way I did about Twilight, except this has a shoujo twist.
Hatsumi is the typical Japanese shoujo heroine I feel conflicted about this series the same way I did about Twilight, except this has a shoujo twist.
Hatsumi is the typical Japanese shoujo heroine who is of course always meek and lowly of golden heart, thinking she's not pretty even though she is, and can't seem to see that every high school boy she comes across falls madly (and secretly, at first) in love with her. Unfortunately, because of her apparently adorable submissive nature and low self-esteem and no self-respect, she can never say no to anyone, though oh my, how she ever wishes she could! This disturbingly common character trait seen in many manga heroines makes her susceptible to being blackmailed into being a "slave", where she is, against her raisin-sized will, forced to become involved with a boy who routinely verbally abuses and hits her. And of course said boy and girl, despite having no good reason for it, begin to awkwardly fall in love with each other. Yeah.
So, how it ties back into Twilight is this, and correct me if this doesn't sound familiar: main twitty unfeminist female character who depends on the boy(s) in her life to validate her existence gets into unhealthy and disrespectful relationship with hot and unattainable guy who goes for her because of how helpless she is (awww), and despite all unrealistic odds have to find a way to be together. For always!
So again, like with Twilight, I'm mad at myself that I'm working on volume 3 right now. I can't figure it out. Maybe it's the hot guys, except this time it has pictures. I guess this is going on my ever-growing list of guilty pleasures...
edit: got halfway through volume 3, and I'm done. the characters are so unlikeable and offensive at this point that I have no desire to read anymore of the series....more
