I requested this book from Scholastic because I loved the premise. I have a soft spot for refugees. Sprinkle in some fantasy and you’ve got my interest. I clearly remember reading the first few pages and scratching my head. I struggled with the language and writing, and after books like and , I figure I'm pretty adaptable to weird ass language and writing styles. I read about 50 pages and put it down for a few weeks. I picked it up again and started to become more interested in the story, but again, the writing was hindering my enjoyment. Also, I started to realize that I was not connecting to the characters because of this jumbled writing. That is why I chose not to pick the book up for a 3rd time.
Now, I have to mention something great about the book that makes me sad for not continuing it. I was really enjoying the world-building, though it was hard to figure it all out. Above is above ground, the city, and these refugees are all “different physically or otherwise, and live below in Safe. Something tragic occurs that leads to a swift evacuation from Safe to Above, where is very unsafe for these unique individuals. The villain that is so briefly introduced was scarier than hell, too, but once the story moves to Above, I started to become bored. I wish I could continue the story to see this world expand and more of the villain, but alas, I’ve chosen to DNF this book because the connection is nonexistent and the language of the characters is just too irritating to follow....more

WI like historicals, especially when they are a royal setting. This book is pretty long, and I made it to 40% before I decided to throw in the towel. While the description of this world is quite beautiful, it is also this attention to detail that turns this book into a chore. I was finally becoming interested in the plot, but not enough to endure the pages and pages of details. I hate that I like the rich details but they are also the reason why I don’t want to bother finishing it. This is personal (and quite contradicting, I know), so don’t let it sway your opinion. All in all, a beautiful world with an interesting plot takes forever to get to. If you like historicals and rich details, give it a shot....more

After 50%, I finally decided to give up because I was not connecting with Helen, her plight, her relationship with Lucas, the . Nothing. It took forever for the book to actually grab me, and when it did, it didn’t last. Honestly, I can’t put my finger on why I decided to give up on Starcrossed, other than I was bored and uninterested. That being said, I really adored Giggles, and enjoyed the mythology woven into the story. Many people loved this book (Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ 4.18 rating) so please make sure you give it a shot if it sounds interesting to you! As sad as it is to admit, the few YA fantasy books I’ve read with Greek mythology ties have not been big hits with me. I love Greek Mythology and this makes me sad. :(...more
I’m loving the steampunk genre so when I saw this one on NetGalley, I jumped at the chance to read it. I hung in until I was 50% through, and decided I’m loving the steampunk genre so when I saw this one on NetGalley, I jumped at the chance to read it. I hung in until I was 50% through, and decided to move on. I was not engaged in the story and did not care about the fate of the characters. There were a few cool scenes (when Julia was running from unknown killer) but otherwise, I was not entertained. Honestly, after reading The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook and The Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare, the author’s interpretation of the steampunk genre did not captivate me. ...more

However, after 50 pages, I could not connect to the story or the characters. I don’t think it has to do with the writing. I just think the story is not for me. I’m trying to pawn it off on hubs because I think it’s right up his alley. The book has a current rating of 3.59 on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, so it’s got some merit....more
