I'm honestly disappointed. I already read several books from this edition most were a great hit with me others not so much. This definitely goes to the bottom of these books.
I believe this is one of the shortest I've read, which is rather disappointing. Mainly because there is not enough space for anything and this is trying to explain drawing not only faces but also different expressions. And I think it sort of fails at both. If this book were dedicated to only one of those, I would give it a better rating, but like this, I cannot.
Especially page 16, which shows different expressions meaning six is very bad. Those drawing are so bad that I have no idea why they are used to show anything at all! It features sadness, laughter, rage, fear, disgust and surprise, but it only includes a short description like "with this emotion, the eyes are enlarged etc.". So not really helpful. And then it closely shows how to draw different "faces" or whatever to call it. All Smiles. Deep in thought. At ease. Aging beauty. And all look very much the same with minor differences.
I do not believe this is good for beginners because it's so brief that it cannot teach them anything....more

Not what I expected at all. I thought that it would explain how to draw land and sea. However, this was about colours which should be used to achieve the best results. Don't get me wrong, this was spectacular to look at, and when I get better at drawing landscape, I may return to this to better understand the colours. But this is not at all for beginners; I would say that this is pushing the lines of advanced. But anyway, I'm going to have a look at it again, because those paintings were just too gorgeous....more

I was interested in this book because I was never really good at using coloured pencils. I always messed up, I had no idea how to do dimensions... or just how to draw pretty.
During reading this I doodled a bit and it looked way better! Yay!
Unfortunately, I can already say that coloured pencils are too much hassle for me. So, I don't think I'll be going back to this. However, it is good to know how to do it....more

Now, hopefully, my mum will let me use her serger. Though it got me confused for a moment because I always knew this thing as an overlock, so I had to google to find out that serger is an overlock.
This introduction to serger was very well done and very clear to absolute beginners. Cause I think it's even generous calling myself a beginner. ...more

At first, I was not really sure about this one. I did not feel like it was providing me with enough description. Sometimes I have felt a bit confused, however, as the book proceeded, it got better, and I managed to appreciate this book. I liked the tips on how to use several tools.
But my favourite thing was when the author explains how to draw a human body in proportion. In other words, how many heads the other body parts have....more

I hoped that this book would get me a better insight into acrylic and maybe I would find a new appreciation for it.
Spoiler Alert: that did not happen.
I read several books from this edition and liked most of them; I always felt like they gave a lot of step by step information. However, this one had me a bit lost. And I did not feel like it was really basics. Especially on only 46 pages or so. Too much information and not enough explanations.
It might be that I do not "feel" the acrylic. I want to love it, but there is something inside me that probably has an aversion to this technique and refuses to learn more.
Well, it means fewer art supplies that I need to buy and store.
Not sure if I would recommend this book to learn about acrylic, I feel like you need some knowledge before reading this one....more

Thank you so much for granting me this wish!
I have to say; these creatures are super fun.
Dragon - super cute, but it looked like a hamster when I tried... Unicorn - It looks like the one in the book but a slightly feral version Dodo - It looks like a turkey! Mine and their as well. Mermaid - It looks like a mermaid, surprise! Gnome - I call him Harry Gnome cause he looks like he just got the Sorting Hat on his head Mandrake - in all honesty, I failed this one so bad! Angel - Until I got to the wings, it looked okay, but then it suddenly turned rotten. Bigfoot - Tell me I'm not the only one who drew it with tiny feet? No? Okay. Boogey Man - The cutes of them all! He needs a Tim Burton movie! Brownie - Who's that? A cleaning gnome? Centaur - If any centaur saw my drawing, they would make a goat out of me! Not that I did not do the same... Chimaera - Mom! I want a chimaera for Christmas! Cyclops - Love them! They solved my problem with not being able to draw even eyes! Demon - He looks like the demon from Futurama. Dwarf - Am I the only one who gave him a bottle of beer? Elf - He got a flowery shirt! No more Christmas attire for this poor guy. Fairy - fairy grandma... I cannot draw this one young, sorry. Faun - he looks like he needs to pee. Frankenstein - no one ever told me to drew Frankenstein as a green Bart Simpson! It works. Gargoyle - Dad! I need a Gargoyle for my Birthday! It looks like a cat with wings. Ghost - easier to draw, what a surprise. Ghoul - I gave him a pineapple to eat, cause it looks like a head with a fabulous hairstyle! Goblin - Mine's pink and yours? Griffin - Okay, this one is impossible to draw from the front; the profile is the way to go. Hippogriff - why does it look like an angry chicken? Hobbit - Sitting on a throne of rings! Btw, why do they have larger feet than a bigfoot does? Imp - looks like the kind of guy who's driving the devil crazy! So much fun to draw. Kraken - Drew like fifteen of these, my fave. Leprechaun - I kept drawing a rainbow around these guys, do they have anything to do with a rainbow? Medusa - She ended looking cuter than a fairy and mermaid, strange isn't? Minotaur - No idea what I did to him, or they. Poor guy, first a labyrinth and now these drawings. Nessie - I have no idea who to tell that I need a Nessie as a pet! So much fun to draw the same as with Kraken. Ogre - I guess he had too many beers. Not my fave. Orc - Into the kitchen with this one! I gave him even the apron my grandma used to have. Pegasus - Either his wings are too huge, and he looks like a dragon or too tiny, and he looks ridiculous. Phoenix - Another chicken. Rumpelstiltskin - A skinny dwarf? Salamander - Okay, I need a bigger house for all my magical pets. Sea Horse - Horse Mermaid? I'm not going to ask about the evolution of this one! Siren - It just looks like a Chicken. Sphinx - It has a nose! Tengu - I did not go the "make it cute" way cause it would be just another Chicken! Troll - A bit mouse-like for my liking. Vampire - Why is he sooo cute?! I cannot stress how much I like this vampire! Already buying a coffin for my magical house for creatures. Werewolf - A cute doggo, I just don't see the "were" part. Yale - A goat with very short legs but I guess he will be a great friend with the Sphinx, I moved them into the same room. Yeti - I'm not even going to tell you how much I've messed up the fur. Zombie - it keeps looking like a robot. Flower fairy - I very much enjoyed drawing the flower hair. Dokkaebi - Make it cute with a skateboard. Enchanted Elephant - So, why they did not add an enchanted Chicken as well? I'm good at drawing chickens! Forest Fairy - I don't know why but they keep looking Maya, if I am brave enough I'll give them their own calendar. Genie - The fairest of them all. Kumiho - I'm not even telling you how many of them I drew and how I love this lovely creature but no cleaning for this one! Grumpy Wizard - Under that cloak, his body disappeared! Flying Monkey - No wings! Flying ears. Mummy - Okay, I failed with this one, Either it looked like nothing because of too much white or I tried using some "blood" red, and it does not look like a mummy. House Elf - Okay, what's the difference between that and an elf? Majestic Corgi - Where is my Chicken? Merman - Don't ask me how terrible this looks. Maine Coon - What is even that? Cat had a bit of fun with a racoon? Baby Witch - Not cute at all, murderous!...more

Can someone, please, explain to me why is it so hard to draw a face? Like, really, I don't get it! It starts so well and I end up with a troll. Every time.

My first granted wish on NetGalley! 😍
What can I say? I was always fascinated by Calligraphy, mainly because my handwriting is horrendous and I keep switching between several "writing styles". I write "s" like four or five different ways. And for some reason, I write L as alpha, don't ask why.
So, of course, since I cannot keep my crappy writing uniform, I would want to get my hands on Calligraphy!
And I think that this might be probably just the best guideline ever. Did you know that there is a proper how to dip your pen in ink? Cause I sure did not!
This book has it all, from the beginning (how to hold your pen kind of beginning) to several different writing styles. And I love it all and I cannot to buy some quill (of course I would buy a writing quill! ) and some ink and make a lot of mess! 🖋🖋🖋🖋🖋...more

I'm pleasantly surprised here. I always wanted to learn how to embroider things but I'm a slow learner in this direction.
I really appreciate that the book took care to show the different stitches. Because that was one of my problems, I know their names in Czech (or French) but sometimes I'm struggling how exactly they are called in English and I often found myself confused by directions. Therefore, I enjoyed that this book started with the basics but at the same time showed several projects which are not basic but something that you can really do and use. I really like that.
I already chose two projects I need to do asap (and I also chose several more for later because they seem more time consuming). I really loved the embroider coasters and the tea towels.
My only issue is that sometimes in the instruction for the projects I feel like the pictures were too small to really understand what the author is trying to show to us. And then there were pictures so big that they took over the whole page when it was absolutely unnecessary....more

Beautiful visuals, however, other than that I have to say that I found this book to be rather disappointing.
I expected to get a more in-depth approach at "looking closer". I was expecting some new approaches, maybe more on the author's experience, some "secret tips". Unfortunately, on relatively small space the author managed to cram in a lot of things graphite, Charcoal, Pen and Ink, Watercolor, and then some projects.
If you're new to drawing and want to have a look and see what would seem like fun to you then maybe this is a book for you.
Unfortunately, since I have some experience with different practices I did not enjoy this. I wish I could say that at least some of the projects seemed like fun which I would want to try but unfortunately no.
I can only say with a good conscience that I recommend this book to beginners who want to learn more about tools and materials for different methods. Here I commend the author, and I'm saying very well done! As always I loved the part about understanding your paper which was my nemesis for a very long time....more
