I love Little Red Riding Hood/Big Bad Wolf stories and was going in open minded but overall expecting a good time from Honey Phillips鈥 alien retelling.
It was written with accuracy and technically proficient, but the style wasn鈥檛 my favorite. There was little suspense and nothing really at stake since we learn it all from dual POV.
The primary offender that made me throw in the towel may not be an issue for others: the overuse of the words SHOULD and SHOULDN鈥檛. Basically the characters were shouldn鈥檛ing all over themselves. LOL. He shouldn鈥檛 be attracted to her, she is his enemy because of her race. She shouldn鈥檛 be having these cozy feelings for her captor鈥lah blah. Rinse and repeat over and over again. And also, nothing exciting happened and I hung in all the way to 41%.

I still hung in for the excitement of the story but had to tap out when it skipped the most alluring part of it and jumped the story ahead 3 months past the whole 鈥済etting to know each other鈥 phase. Kinda wondering how this came onto my radar in the first place. I can鈥檛 recommend unless you have a high tolerance for story shenanigans....more

Setting is a fictional country, Sierran, with modern royal types who actually work and run companies. Got to the first intimate scene and disgusted by the timing and language of it. She literally is going to see her mother in critical condition after an accident for the first time and this guy decides that is the sexy time to pull her into a broom closet to give her her first sexual experience? Booo. Plus, like I said the language of the attempted sexy scene was just bad and gross....more

I am not rooting for this 鈥渃ouple鈥 and don鈥檛 think anything can be revealed that would endear him to me. I really don鈥檛 care how hot and charming he is. He stood her up for a rite of passage school dance, despite being a family friend even, potentially started a horrible rumor about her and ghosted her for 6 years. Now every single other person in the book is pushing her to date him and forgive him. Where is the loyalty? It feels like gaslighting.
I just feel sorry for Savannah and at this point would be happier if she rejected him and found a guy who treats her right from the beginning. Also, she needs to find a better social support system who won鈥檛 try to manipulate her. See, this is what I stumble into when I try stepping out into the contemporary romance genre instead of my usual. ...more

This story from whaDNF鈥 made it through a whopping 4 chapters and calling it quits. Maybe it鈥檚 just me but I am so exhausted with modern retellings. This story from what I saw so far, strips away all the things I love about Hades and Persephone in the original story. I want the creepy graveyard like vibes. I want a tortured super lonely Hades who needs Persephone with every bit of his being, not some money hoarding nightclub owner. I also want my God of Death to act like he鈥檚 the God of Death. Don鈥檛 even get me started on Persephone鈥檚 total lack of character aside from her mommy issues. She needed a save the cat moment to make readers like her. Also the whole premise for how he tricked her was BS. The terms negotiated were a question answered each hand and she answered them. For her to just roll over with his unspoken price 鈥渆ntrapment鈥 when her freedom is at stake is really not endearing me to her at all. Then she鈥檚 dumb enough to promise a favor of unknown content at some unknown point in the future. Shaking my head.
Some loved this, but I did not. I agree the writing had a very immature feel to it that ruined it for me. Note to self to stay away from these modern retellings in the future....more
