Harry Potter is great. I've loved the movies, plan to see them all and plan to read all the books (yes, I'm getting a later start than some). Much fun to read, though the writing is really nothing special. In fact, it's a good example for kids to see how much weaker "telling instead of showing" can be. She does throw in a lot of dialogue and action, but in between it's a lot of just plain old explaining. Maybe that's appropriate for children's books, I can't really remember. Anyway, I had fun reading the first (it's pretty quick, which helps), so I'll continue. I just can't see how there could've been a course at Harvard on this stuff....Also wanted to give props to the folks who created The Worst Witch (the movie) a long time ago about a witches' boarding school. I think it was Canadian. The special effects were poor, but that wasn't the point. They hit on this idea first and did well with it. Obviously not as well as Ms. Rowling, of course. ;) Bring on the Chamber!...more
