although this memoir was full of some depressing and heavy tragedies, i was still basically giggling at least once every five minutes. youngmi mayer and i do not share the same culture, but i found that she did a stellar job at discussing issues of racism and feminism in a way that was not SO western or white-centric. genuinely the most exhausting part of engaging with western feminist work is trying to connect with the 60% of it that applies to me, while stowing away the other 40% because it's too rooted in tradition to describe in a way that doesn't sound completely outlandish to westerns.
in her criticism of her parents, i found her to be brave and fair. she took their pain and trauma into account, but didn't shy away from describing the times they'd let her down & passed their trauma onto her.
oh and this was a decent lesson in the history between japan and korea! i admittedly know so little about this topic, and this book is pushing me to learn a bit more. ...more

solid book! full of fun facts about the animal kingdom, as well as some evolutionary triggers i had no clue about. loveee when they answer questions i didn;t know i had. it all started to jumble together about 8 hours into the audiobook, but i think that's on me. i'm sure the text version is linear & somewhat easier to digest....more

painful at times, but mostly sweet. i've had the same mental struggles as Anderson, and it was a bit jarring to hear my exact inner narrative spoken back to me. it also peeled back a layer of seriousness and showed me how silly those thoughts can be. i often look back at all my childhood experiences with nature with bitter-sweetness; glad to have had those experiences, but grieving that they'll never happen again. turns out i'm a clown!!! as jarod put it, nature never went away, i did. i will go to the creek again. i will hang out with the turtles again. i will climb a tree again....more

okay okay actual review.. i lowkey didn't know this was a trilogy.. i thought this was setting the plot up for another book. the more i sit with this book, the less i like it. i didn't really love the time jumps and the (sometimes) vague story lines. i just kept thinking that this was a second-read type of book, but i was barely that gripped the first time around :/ i GUESS i enjoyed the concept of the ending? but it ultimately felt rushed and left me frustrated with questions. oh well womp womp boohoo ...more

i'm making this book sound like it was just catastrophizing about what's to come, but in reality that was maybe 15% of the book's content. Margaret Renkl has an exquisite way of romanticizing what i've taken for granted. these short little essays illuminated the blessings around me.
on the one hand, i wish i'd read the print version so i could see the illustrations, but on the other, the author's sweet country voice sold this audiobook all the more. all the more is sooo weird to use in a sentence. feels fake! anyway the book was short and fast enough for me to go for seconds and grab a printed copy :) ...more

had a lot of fun with this one! i was much more invested in this new setting and new cast of characters than i was with the last book's. i was also happy to see the characters i gave a shit about from book 1 & 2 make appearances in this book. i had some trouble in the past buying wendell and emily's relationship, can't lie, especially with how much disdain emily had towards him, but that was remedied in this book. i get it now. he's pathetic. i see it!...more

since i'm already discussing negatives, i'll add that the pacing was a bit off. much of the conflict raised between two people was usually resolved within 1-2 pages, and had no lasting effect on the plot. as for the whole book, it did feel like 90% of it was just plotting and preparing, only for the final battle to fly by without much contention.
even though i was often lost, as i mentioned earlier, the fantastic character development for the main cast (even for the dude i don't fuck with) kept drawing me back in! i think if i read the books in succession, i would have been more attuned to this fantasy world. it's well written and expansive, but once i lost the plot, it was hard to find my place again. reader error methinks.. that being said yaaaay delicious wlw yearning yip yip hooray!! ...more
