The story itself is closer to 4.25 ⭐️. If you try to unravel the time travel “threads here, your mind sort of misfires. This book wraps up QUICK. It’s (nearly frustratingly) mysterious all the way up until the 85%ish mark and then the answers come quick. The narration was fantastic, highly recommend the audiobook. Overall entertaining, good candy. Wish I could read a version of this book without Penn, and where the characters meet a bit more naturally/less awkward. Also, it felt like so much time was passing in the storyline where they were essentially “hiding their relationship, and between times when the characters communicated/were together. ...more

I love an unreliable narrator, I just wish I hadn’t picked up on it just a few chapters in. The way you (as a reader) get absolutely gaslit for this entire book is fun. Fucking brutal and somehow feels like this should be an absolutely mandatory read. This book will break your heart a hundred times over.
The writing, Fucking brutal and somehow feels like this should be an absolutely mandatory read. This book will break your heart a hundred times over.
The writing, the storytelling is 5/5. Kristen Hannah writes of the war so descriptively you feel like you can physically feel the atmosphere in Vietnam. It’s gritty and gory and pulled no punches. Addressing the post-war issues took a different tone but highlights very real mental health issues that are still relevant today. I think I could have done with a little less romantic drama because the story holds a lot of merit without it, however I do think it ties into the story of how internalized trauma can destroy lives.
The audio narration by Julia Whelan is 10/10, maybe her best performance yet (and I’m a huge fan.)
The historical fiction aspect of this, and the writing deserves 5⭐️ however, for me personally I think overall this book gets 4⭐️ only because it’s not necessarily “enjoyable. (And doesn’t need to be.) I would be hard pressed to read it again, (which I generally consider a req for 5⭐️) only because of the traumatic nature of the story....more

5⭐️ ending - but a lot of this book (like I don’t know, the first 650 pages or so,) read closer to 3 ⭐️s. The love bombing was so antithetical to how Vi and Xaden have been in the first two books I was convinced while reading that maybe there was some sort of accdidental intention projecting happening than intention-reading by Xaden. The storytelling style for the first few chapters grated on me, as the reader, feeling a step behind what the characters know is only exciting for so long, but it felt vast and carried on too long. There were a few scenes I felt were plot holes, (for example instead of getting court marshalled all is just forgiven) and didn’t make sense for the setting of the story. One of the largest “twists of the book just didn’t hit for me and I actually felt relief over sadness. (Don’t want to spoil it so will leave this super vague - but iykyk.) I was sad how for most of the book Rhi was written out, and when she did show up it felt a little too late and had a hard time connecting with the material. One small thing that drove me crazy- was all the last names used, I feel this was sudden and I had a hard time following/remembering the last names of the massive cast of cadets....more

The Inception-like moments were plot point gold.
Also, I think I use Julia Whalen’s voice as therapy now.
