Maybe I read too much romance, but I really don鈥檛 understand why this relationship would be so taboo. They met when they were both adults and before they even knew their parents were together. I feel like they would have been able to control the narrative if they would have just come clean about it up front. I鈥檓 sure they would have received some backlash, but surely that would still be better than the approach they chose.
As an independent woman, Chloe is precisely the kind of character I hate. It鈥檚 one thing to be pampered, but it鈥檚 another thing entirely to be too stupid to figure out how to do your own laundry. I mean鈥 google exists, so there鈥檚 really no excuse. I was already bothered that she was so quick to accept his offer to foot the bill for her life in Boston, but her blowing her rent money on expensive face creams from Sephora knowing he would have to bail her out was so gross. Sig was a complete simp for her from day one and while there鈥檚 something romantic about it in theory, I didn鈥檛 see enough evidence that she deserved that kind of devotion from him.
There was at least some plot to this one, but as usual, Tessa eventually circled back to the smut. I can handle a little dirty talk, but TB always crosses my threshold. When I say that the writing was cringe I mean it literally. I was physically cringing through half this book and the entirety of the explicit scenes. I actually just downloaded a clean romance as a palate cleanser鈥 I鈥檒l probably regret that. ...more

A dark and atmospheric Red Riding Hood retelling with nods to Hades & Persephone. Reader鈥檚 familiar with JLA鈥檚 work, will also notice many similarities to From Blood & Ash.
Because of her magical singing voice, Rowan must serve a 5 year term ferrying the dead through the Dark Wood to the God of Death. She spent her childhood training to 鈥減lease鈥 the God of Death and was expected to maintain her virginity to offer to him and eventually serve as a sacrifice to protect the rest of her people. The virgin sacrifice bit did not need to be included and frankly didn鈥檛 make a lot of sense. How did she 鈥渢rain鈥 to please him if she must remain pure? Don鈥檛 answer that. ...more

With a few changes, I think I could have loved this, but there were some issues I just couldn鈥檛 get past. My biggest hang up was the FMC. After following the clues left in his journal, Margot discovers that the MMC (Van) was turned to stone nearly a hundred years ago and she is miraculously able to bring him back to life. This would be an absolutely amazing and terrifying event to witness for her, but can you imagine how traumatic it would have been for him? Any normal person would treat him with kindness and explain what happened to him with care. Not Margot, she immediately starts arguing with him about unimportant things and unceremoniously reveals to him that he had been a statue for 100 years without an ounce of empathy.
She is laser focus on her desire to find the shards and put together the vase and seems unconcerned by what that could mean for Van (you will see that it means a lot). At the very least you would think they would both be concerned about being turned into a statue for good, but I鈥檓 not sure that thought ever even crossed their minds. At one point during a discussion/argument she tells him something along the lines of 鈥渁t least everyone who hated you is dead.鈥 I was shocked by this line. Honestly, how inconsiderate and unfeeling can a person be?
I guess it鈥檚 really just the FMC that needed some tweaks. I think the author was trying too hard to make this enemies-to-lovers. Yes, we love that trope, but not everything needs to be enemies-to-lovers and I think this is a good example of that. I would have much rather she have shown him empathy and support as the only person in the world who knew what he had been through. This had so much potential! I really wish I had loved it more!

My biggest issue with this book is that the cover does not match the book. At face value, I was expecting a cute rom-com for book lovers and what I got instead was a never ending stream of heavy topics with a side of romance. The sheer number of difficult topics frankly made my head spin and the writing felt disjointed as the author jumped from one to the next.
The timeline isn鈥檛 completely linear and there are some flashbacks included, but there are also portions of the book where the FMC had conversations with her deceased best friend in the present as if she was still alive and sitting next to her in her flat. I often struggled to understand if a given scene was in the past or present in these instances. Her delusions are so complete that she can physically see her sitting in the chair beside her. This bothered me a bit because the MMC鈥檚 mother had some pretty severe mental health issues so you would think the author would have at least included therapy for the FMC along with all of her other serious topics, but she chose to write her visions like magical realism instead.
The whole time I was reading I wondered what in the world the MMC could have done that would have been so bad, but yea that was pretty bad. Somewhat understandable, but bad. The made for tv bullies in this book are awful, but still, that would be hard to forgive especially because that decision would have had a long lasting impact on her life and her family. As far as his guilt over his dad鈥檚 career choice goes? That logic was pretty thin in my opinion. If his mom had bullied him and blamed him for being born all his life, I guess it鈥檚 possible he would feel that way, but it seems excessive.
Maybe I would have had a better time with this if I had a more realistic idea of what to expect going in, but then again, maybe I wouldn鈥檛 have picked it up at all. ...more

The author had me hooked at the beginning but from there my interest started to wane. I struggled to connect with the FMC (Ivy) and I couldn鈥檛 muster up much interest for either MMC. (Also hate a love triangle. ...more
