Genre: Erotic Romance. Cover: 7/10 Writing: 9/10 Heroine: 8/10 Hero: 9/10 Hotness: 6/10 Romance: 9/10 Extra book Details: Heroines POV. Approx 255 kindle pages. Stand alone.
After the treatment her ex inflicted upon her, Annie abandoned her trust. And her desire left her five years ago.
'Back home, the last man who'd touched me had boxed my right ear so bad, the drum perforated. With my left I heard him say he loved me not an hour later. I'm sorry. I won't ever hit you again. He said that a lot in the two months I let myself believe it. I'd been dumb at twenty-two, but I’d gotten smarter since then.'
Through the local library, Annie does outreach work, everything from reading aloud to pensioners, to teaching underprivileged kids their ABC's. At the prison, she's required to help the inmates better themselves, whether it be reading with them, building resumes or teaching basic literacy. She doesn't expect herself to be quickly knocked off her feet by an inmate.
'One inmate stood out among the group, even sitting down. Stood out in his stillness and his focus... dark brows, dark stubble, dark lashes and eyes. And he was handsome. So handsome it broke your heart.'
Eric quickly became an obsession, and it isn't one sided. Annie finds herself getting secret, heartfelt and erotic notes. But no matter how wonderful Eric may seem, can she ever see the goodness in his violent past?
'I’d be real gentle, though. Tender. I promise. It's just that I’ve felt nothing but my own hand for so long. I'd kill to know how your mouth felt.'
'Hard Time' is an erotic contemporary romance, though heavy on the romance. Even the erotic scenes feel romantic, but don't get me wrong, they're still pretty hot.
I loved how the book started out. The detail in the prison's procedures made it feel real and well researched. There's a lot of description and inner monologue as well as letter reading in the first half of the book. The writing style reminded me a little of Charlotte Stein's work, heavy on the feeling, description and sensually written.
Annie was a good character, little bland for my tastes, but otherwise solid. Fighting over her head and heart a little. Eric was a wonderful male, not like I expected him to be, he's sincere, innocent in some ways and made me feel great empathy towards him.
'Hard Time' is a perfect example of how an author can grow. Cara Mckenna has proved that she can write much more than kinky erotica with this slow build highly romantic full length novel.

It was dark and gritty, and had all the right elements of a good NA storyline. But it had too much 'telling' and not enough 'showing' for me. Too much of the story and emotion was told through long inner monologues and wasn't left to be discovered by the reader.

A slight sweet and sad, new adult read. I think what was missing, was the romance. I felt the similarities between the leads, but that was about it. TA slight sweet and sad, new adult read. The heroine tried to get an understanding on the hero, but she never quite got there until the end, and i didn't get their love through the loving, but i did get their connection through their understanding of life....more
