First of all, I need a shelf called “Extremely Stupid Names. I thought Den Of Vipers (which I also did not like) was the biggest offender but sadly, a new player has entered the game. I will spare you the details because they are THE worst but there are at least 6 characters in here where you think “ugh, this name is the worst, this is rock bottom and then that happened 5 more times and it always got worse. Every time one was mentioned it took me right out of the story. Safe to say I never really managed to get into it (the cop car scene, what?).
And can we stop already with the barely legal children living the lives of experienced porn stars? I used to be such a fan of this author but now it’s just getting extremely weird how young all the characters always are, especially the girls. You’d think at some point the “I just turned 18 two hours ago, let’s bang thing gets, well, old. But apparently, no....more
I went in with zero expectations and ended up loving the hell out of this.

This was not perfect, hence the 4 stars instead of 5 because of some things that happened in the book and at times it got a little too sappy for my taste. But still, a great read!...more

I mean I've devoured about all of SJM's books, same with Leigh Bardugo and as much as I like their writing, I don't feel like I have to read everything they write.
In comes Penelope Douglas. With the exception of one book (that's waiting on my Kindle) I've read everything that woman writes. Bully was the first book I got my hands on a few years ago and it still has a special place on my shelves. I read it (and parts of it) more times than I can count. I bought Birthday Girl before really knowing what it was about and even put the books I was already reading on hold.
If you are expecting this book to be all about a young girl having a daddy kink then I think you'll be a bit disappointed. I loved the relationship building and how it never really felt like he was a horny old(er) guy, preying on a young girl who has been let down by almost everybody in her life, with a few rare exceptions. Even with their age difference, it never really seemed like their interactions were of the father/daughter kind, except when they wanted it to be when they were fighting. And god, the smut was really hot, just trust me and read this.
This book has been written with a lot of taste because it could have gone into a whoooole different direction. I'm glad it didn't.
So now there is nothing left for me to do but just admit it: I will read anything PD writes....more
