I found it the other day and picked it up where I left off. I completely understand why it is a classic and the concept was interesting but I wouldn't say I necessarily enjoyed it. I definitely learned more about the historical setting and the perspectives and experiences of Chinese and Japanese Americans that I previously did not know anything about - so I preferred the bits set in the 1940s. But I struggled to get hooked on the story as it was a bit predictable and the writing wasn't particularly engaging. Overall felt a like a chore to finish....more

I enjoy historical fiction especially when ordinary peoples experiences are reflected in the pages, which means this book was easy for me to engage inI enjoy historical fiction especially when ordinary peoples experiences are reflected in the pages, which means this book was easy for me to engage in. I liked how short the chapters were making the flipping back and forth of perspectives easy to understand. It was a little slow paced in the middle which knocked it down a star but overall I loved the characters and enjoyed reading it despite its heavy subject....more
