Yeah, the book takes place in the 1920s, but I was hoping it could do a bit better with its theme of feminism. “Before the week was over he had whipped Janie. Not because her behavior justified his jealousy, but because it relieved that awful fear inside of him. Being able to whip her reassured him in possession. This is the saint in the book.? I mean, there is worse shown in our modern books Far worse, but Yeah.
Anyways, the rest of this book was beautifully written, it’s just this part that made me snort-laugh a bit.
But I’m in a good mood since I’ve finished annotating every single page including the foreword (I have to for school.) Writing about every symbol, metaphor, chiasmus, and my every reaction took a few years off my lifespan. But I finished annotations a week early so it’s not so awful. I was writing like 6 paragraphs per page with the last chapters.. I better at least get a B+ or A-....more

It began pretty dull but picked up in the middle; the plot with the two Douglas was pretty interesting. I I actually don’t have anything else to say. I guess that’s why this rating is in the middle.
Oh, I actually do this book felt sort of goofy at times and it was hard to take it seriously then. I was also imagining Douglas Garrick as. I need help. That United Healthcare CEO. ...more

But it didn’t make seeing it happen any better. Lenore Dove was a lot like Lucy Gray (I watched the movie, I didn’t read the book, and I’m not sure how to feel about what’s become of Rachel Zegler.) Their dreams for ending tyranny were practically mirror images, both of their names started with L and their surnames were colors (dove and gray.) So it felt like seeing Lucy Gray again, but in a relationship with a man far more ethical. I can’t help but feel like Snow saw Lucy Gray in Lenore Dove and perhaps envied Haymitch a bit for it. Lucy Gray had tried to poison Snow with a snake but Lenore Dove had died with her last words being about how she loved Haymitch. It’s pretty chilling when you think about it. And with Haymitch’s mom and Sid and Ampert? They reminded me of Katniss mom (okay, not that much for her,) Primrose, and Rue. Especially considering how Prim and Sid both died from flames and how Haymitch and Katniss tried to rebel against the Capitol with Ambert and Rue’s deaths respectively.
I gave this a 3/5 because it was sort of dull in some parts, like when the recap for the Games was being shown, I was thinking, “can’t this be summed up in a paragraph or two? What’s the need for all these pages? So the story could just drone on and on like that at times with me mentally begging for a paraphrase. Also the Capitol was kind of re—dumb in this book. I was really underwhelmed by those bums....more

-Xaden and Violet’s romance is jus**spoiler alert** It was enjoyable at first, but now that I think about it, it sucked. Like, really, REALLY sucked.
-Xaden and Violet’s romance is just toxic. I don’t care if Xaden’s becoming venin is affecting his behavior; it’s not an excuse. I’ve seen people say that this ultra-possessive version of Xaden is very hot, but I’m confused. Like really confused. I’d be screaming at a guy if he acted like this with me. And don’t get me started with Xaden teaching Violet how to kill him in case he loses control and tries to hurt her. Considering that this is a ROMANtasy, this tears the rating down quite a bit. -The use of modern language will always tank the rating; why did Violet say everyone was “cooked like it’s some chat between middle schoolers? Imho, I cannot tell if this is supposed to be medieval anymore, but it doesn’t align with the level people were at in the 18th century. I think I’ll post this question in the Readers Q&A, because Lord help me, I’m confused. So for the TASY part of romantasy, this is what drags the rating down even more. -And also, what backup plan did Violet have if the Triumvirate was NOT trying to poison them? She literally gave them a drink which could have them be leaking blood from both ends during a diplomatic meeting. An illicit diplomatic meeting. And Ridoc scolds Xaden for attacking Faris but says nothing about Violet literally poisoning the entire Triumvirate? The characters were literally licking Violet’s toes there.. None of her behavior was smart there; it was just reckless and selfish! Like if one of members of the Triumvirate began leaking blood and clutching their stomach without them doing ANYTHING, it would reinforce the stereotype of “ferocious, vicious dragon-riders and may or may not cause a war. I am guilty for rating Iron Flame one star now, so I’ll swap this one with IF.
Just because I enjoyed something doesn’t mean it was good- this book was guilty pleasure and I’ll just feel more guilt if I rate it higher. It’s like eating a cake then seeing the nutrition facts. Sucks.
And the rating keeps on going down so I don’t know what to say about that. It’s even lower than Iron Flame now. Interesting. I’m now checking in every now and then to see how low it can go compared to the others. I’m kinda shocked that this is lower than IF, but who am I to judge? Neither was that great....more
**spoiler alert** Eh, could be worse, but could definitely be better.

This book felt extremely rushed to me- very rushed but with a plot moving too slow. Those things kill me in books. Yes, the end was as entertaining as hell, but a battle against great evil can’t just happen at the end and nowhere else I know Violet and Xaden killed some wyvern that were about to attack with wards and another time with lightning, but it didn’t feel like a battle Just a little skirmish, if I can even call it that.
And the relationship drama. I liked Xaden in the first book but I wanted him dead in this book. He’s like Dain now but with a tongue twice as sharp and Violet will kill me if she complains one more time about secrets. I get that Xaden is being toxic about it as well, but when I have to read ten of these arguments instead of battles in a book about a war-college and dragons, it’s. Agitating.
But the ending? Yeah, I’ll admit, that was sad. But I’ve built quite a tolerance for things like that. This cannot compare to the death of (Game of Thrones spoilers)

I found her incredibly dumb in the first book, but at least she got better here.
And there’s something else I’m confused about what the hell are the official terms for male and female fae? Someone said that male fae were formally called “gentlemales, the book referred to female faeries as “women, and someone else said that male faeries were called “dwarves, and someome else said that it was just “males..
And also on the topic of aging, I feel my brain cells shriveling up and dying. I thought it was established that Fae reach maturity at about 80, so why were they described to be undergoing puberty in their teens? Why were Mor’s parents mortified she bled in her late teens (or early twenties, I forgot)? Does their puberty just take forever????? And what makes children so rare anyways? I’m guessing some sort of magical complications..
And holy mother of info-dumps, this book read like a textbook sometimes. Rhysand and co. casually feeding us their backstories for pages and pages was. Interesting to say the least, considering how little information was given on gender terms and aging…
The saving grace for this book was that I actually kind of liked the world building Though the info-dumps put a damper on it. Showing vs. telling would be much, MUCH better. And even if the information isn’t given, a sense of mystery about Rhysand and co.’s backstories would be pretty neat. ...more

**spoiler alert** What an emotional whirlwind! War, love, dragons, magic, betrayal.. This was jarring as hell.. I can honestly say that this is one **spoiler alert** What an emotional whirlwind! War, love, dragons, magic, betrayal.. This was jarring as hell.. I can honestly say that this is one of the most entertaining fantasy books I’ve read, but the main issue I have is logical fallacies. Why was it mentioned that gryphons struggle with breathing at high altitudes when dragon riders were mentioned to have no trouble? And (this is really nit-picky, sorry) the names of the months and week days should be different, this pissed me off. For instance, “August cannot be a month name in this high fantasy as it takes place in a different world than ours- August was named after a Roman emperor. And “Saturday was named from our ancient religions. On top of that, I don’t get why Xaden couldn’t just man the daggers with his shadows to kill the venin- I know he was deeply engaged with a lot of other things, but it was odd that he never attempted it, as he can literally teleport himself, people, and other things with his shadows, as well as materialize his shadows. Remember when he choked the six cadets out with tentacles made of shadows? And on the topic of Xaden, the “love at first sight thing he had with Violet is odd since he was literally shown trying to scare Violet into falling off the Parapet right when she got on.
And also Why does Violet have to rattle off on info-dumps whenever she’s terrified? It’s paragraphs of text-book history. I sort of liked it because I like a nerdy underdog, but it was a bit much. ...more

There was a gigantic exposition dump which had me quit this book for a month (and I was extremely busy with other things, a leisure book should be somewhat entertaining.) But I came back and it turned out that the book wasn’t as dull in entirety as the start, the climax was great but there was WAY too much exposition. The exposition dump took away 2 stars. Also, the characters felt extremely realistic and fleshed out, but their fates/the end of this book was very predictable. The guy survives and it’s happy ever after. But I did feel that intense drama nonetheless, truly nail-biting (I don’t bite my nails, but still.) And the comedy! This book was hilarious at times, it felt like watching a drama/comedy movie, which- did I mention that there’s a movie about this? I found out right after I bought the book and holy shit I’m so hyped. I’ll try to watch it in a few weeks or so.
