Feels weird to give a low rating when majority is raving on and on for this book.
The beginning of the book, it was cute. That’s my jam - el1.5 stars.

The beginning of the book, it was cute. That’s my jam - elite socialite gone wrong, ended up in broody, grunting man’s territory when she tries to ‘Piper it up?
You know I’m a sucker for slow burns. I was till the graphic sex scenes. I was just okay nope, my brain shut off and I was just scanning, flipping the pages till the end.
I was actually hoping to hear more from Mick side? Like we only caught a glimpse of how he really feels about Brandon and Piper. Even then, it was brushed off when Brandon was trying to bring Piper back. What the heck was “I might have said something that offended her??? I get it, no one can replace your daughter, sir but I was hoping to see his development and finally accepting Piper - so that Brandon don’t feel bad.
Because my dude immediately forgot his wife. He was struggling to remove the ring. Finally did and then went straight to hooking up with Piper because “he can’t keep it in anymore
Also recharging station? You know what I think when I read that phrase? You know in SG, we have these sustainable ‘rental battery operated cars we can use but after use, we need to find a charging station to refill its “fuel. That’s what crosses my mind when I see that phrase.
Maybe I’m a prude (definitely am) but the sex scene really took up a lot of space in the book that the actual development (to me) were rushed. I never minded pet names that much till Brendan. I cringe everytime he says it and I have to close my eyes to relax.
Was disappointed at this book. Saw so many people raves about it but sadly it ain’t for me. Please don’t throw rotten tomatoes at me....more

So I shall settle for the first quarter. That’s great to those who gave it a 5 stars - good for you but imma head out while I still can. ...more

Reading the mini excerpt on the back of the book had me sort of hooked. A book about an Asian female, drilled to be the child prodigy of her family, musically talented, anxious and stressed out all the time?? Count me in! Especially in the height of the recent Asian hate crime in the US (even though the beginning part of the book is set in Australia).
Already in the first page of the book, I was thrown off by how vulgar the description for the ‘hook-up scene was. I mean I can be old-fashioned but there were other books that I’ve read that had sex on them but this book was just too distasteful.
Also, the way the main character interacts with people, like her close friend and roommates, it’s like as if she’s a robot or something. Where’s the emotion? And the dialogue, both inner and verbal are so short. It’s one of those short sentences. That’s goes like this. For me, it’s super draining to read like that. Since you have to stop, then continue. Like so. Then again, that’s just me.
There was also a part where the MC was watching what sounds like S.A. / S.H. Like I’m supposed to favour an MC that condone that ??????? I hope I misinterpreted it wrongly and its not depicting what I think it is.
Overall, the book isn’t for me. As much, as I love an independent, strong female protagonist, especially when she’s a person of non-white background. However, her personality.....her ‘blaming everyone attitude? No thanks! I get the ‘self abuse because I still trash talk to myself but like.......more

We follow their adventures as they reunite and promote the campaign of a democrat senator for the town.
First off, I am never a fan of split narrative, it's like one moment you'll be reading in the voice of Jamie - getting to know him better, being his shoes and you're then somehow in Maya's shoes instead and you're just like.....wait a minute. You know how they say like you're in the flow of a book and you've stopped abruptly as the narrative. Yup.
There's a few themes going on while I ventured further into the book - there were a few pretty sensitive topics that were brought to life; for example - this book was set during the holy month of fasting / Ramadan which is relatively rare in the generalised YA books. My girl Maya really be kissing James during Ramadan huh.
I appreciate getting to explore more on Muslim / Jewish tradititons but I felt like that quote;
'Too many cooks spoil the broth'
There are so many issues and topics that are being handled in one book that it felt meh. It just turned out to be very one-sided. Like for example, they'll be discussing about Ramadan, then it's on Hijab Ban, then tackling a bit on racism. For me, I would prefer if the author chose a theme and explore more on the topic throughout the book - for example, if the scene is to be set in Ramadan - then focus more on the holy month. Instead of, you know, acknowledging it and just leaving it there.
Onto the character, personally I found that Maya has a very 'Blame everyone but yourself' vibe going on.
Is that how teenagers are? WAS I LIKE THAT?
I cannot symphatise with her - She reminds me of an acquaintance I know who needs to let people know she's grunge, not your average Muslim and, to always feel bad for her. This person would get really angry when you wish your fellow Muslim pals a 'Eid Mubarak' when you're not Arab. And I'll just be side-eyeing her like.......
I can see that Jamie is trying his best to socialise with Maya but she gives off this 'The World vs. Me' vibe.
Overall, I felt like the book could do away with some parts of the story as I skimmed through several chapters could still have a rough idea of what is going on. I also thought that it could focus on a handful (one or two) major topics to discuss on but not a whole chunk of it as it would then feel very one-sided.
At the end of the day; I like to think back on what did I learn from the book.
