I almost would have given it A solid four star read for this angsty small town enemies-to-lovers/second chance romance (some of my favorite tropes!).
I almost would have given it 4.5, but I enjoyed the last 30% a lot less. I thought the ending dragged on, and Lucien鈥檚 transformation was a little too abrupt for my taste....more

This is a good enemies-to-lovers that stands out for its excellent, drawn out grovel on the part of the hero. From the blurb, I assumed the hero was mafia but he is actually just a ruthless business man not afraid to cross a few lines to get the job done.
I found this to be relatively low angst and the main couple has a pretty sweet and straight forward relationship given the circumstances (hero was blackmailed into marrying the heroine).

Solid mafia romance with serious dubious consent and dark with some serious violence in my opinion. This is only my first re-read, but this one frequently crosses my mind when I think of mafia romances - it stands out. It becomes way less strong after the resolution and the wrap up goes on forever. (Also: one year olds do not say 鈥渕om or dad鈥 as one of their first words, they say ma or mama or da or dada, right??)
On the focus of my reread, yes, this is a mafia romance, so yes the MMC is obsessed and possessive, but I thought in the context of the genre, it was a little tamped down. There is the Simeone scene (violently murdering a flunkie for perving on the heroine), but it鈥檚 hard for me to swallow a top-tier controlling alpha would just let his girl walk away....more

I went looking for possessive, jealous, and controlling heroes and, boy, did this book deliver. It was a bit unique, because the hero, whose name I鈥檝e already forgotten just one day later, wasn鈥檛 especially violent and his actions, which included birth control tampering, were portrayed as benevolent. The heroine also never realizes she is being manipulated. All in all, it was okay but didn鈥檛 quite hit the spot. If I鈥檝e going down this path, I prefer more overt manipulation. ...more

My first issuDNF at 53 percent. Maybe I will go to back to this someday and finish - it wasn鈥檛 bad, but a few issues kept me from wanting to continue.
My first issue is the insta-love - both characters are basically already obsessed with one another just based on a few chance encounters and watching one another come and go. I prefer to see some relationship development.
Second, this book feels like faux-dark. Don鈥檛 get me wrong, the hero is a hitman (for good) and certainly have several killings and a dark subject matter. But it鈥檚 like otherwise a totally normal relationship with a perfect, dare I say, sweet hero who does all the right things for the heroine. ...more

Heyer is one of my favorite authors, so I went to immediately download it. I can鈥檛 say I didn鈥檛 enjoy the dialogue, well-developed side characters, and the ultimate ending, but I would argue the author has much better works. Both main characters were so young and kept falling into stressful situations! And it didn鈥檛 feel much like a romance until the last 20 percent or so....more
