In essence, a historical conspiracy with some secret society out to get them. I liked how Bondurant was a flawed hero - loner, misogynist, and promiscIn essence, a historical conspiracy with some secret society out to get them. I liked how Bondurant was a flawed hero - loner, misogynist, and promiscuous, drinks too much, smokes, and still without exercising, he's somehow still incredibly handsome. However, there's too much black and white opposites in this book - Bondurant's the atheist, Domenika is the fervant religious believer. The "evil"society's name looks suspiciously like a misspelling of demon....hmmm, you think they'd have caught that one!
Agree with other reviews about the pacing of the book - too slow in the first half, then too rushed in the second half.
Things about this book that bothered me include - (view spoiler)[ 1) the mysterious second blood on the shroud 2) the role of Kishan's sister and her abusive husband - they were introduced but seemed irrelevant 3) How even though all their indications indicate the shroud was from 2000 years ago, they believe one guy who tests for DNA and claims it is goats blood 4) who leaked the report? - it's a what can go wrong will situation 5) why no one questions Sato's miraculous recovery, he's injured, he's well, and no one seems to care? 6) Bondurant's attempted murder is rushed through with no investigation?
