This book was okay. Films like "The perks of being a wallflower" or "Infamous" (and my love for Capote's In cold blood) made me overly hype it, which wasn't fair to it, but even taking that away I do feel it's pretty average. The themes are interesting but there didn't seem to be anything too impressive or deep for me. I did like the ending and how it tied with the seemingly expository beginning of the novel, and in general I understand the love for Atticus Finch. I wouldn't not recommend it, I think it's a good read and it shouldn't take as long to read it as I took, although I do want to watch the film now and see what they kept and how they portrayed it....more

Of course, there's always poems that feel like "filler" for me personally, but then others just hit you like a ton of bricks and stay with you (or haunt you) for the rest of your days so. Just beautiful, as always....more

In any case, I was warned by my girlfriend but it is true that this issue is slightly disappointing. There are mostly perspectives from femmes (which are an interesting narrative most of the times since I don't tend to read anything from femme authors BUT in one occasion they were quite rude about this very fact when they were literally sharing their story in a magazine about butch people?? anyways). I felt like the lack of coherence between pictures and texts, and not knowing whether you were going to hear from a butch or a femme lesbian, it was slightly jarring and it seemed to miss the point of the magazine entirely. There were still good things to take from this issue and it is a labour of love anyways, but I do hope the next ones have a bit more direction (which I'm sure they will!)...more

This novel happened in my head as if it were a film and it made it so easy to take everything in. I get really emotional that books like this one exist, not perfect but definitely makes those of us living in the margins and in-betweens feel comfortable and warm. The worldbuilding left me desperate for more too, I know it probably won't happen but imagining the possibilities makes me feel really inspired !!! This was great great great....more

I started it while doing my finals, which wasn’t my brightest idea. That might have played a role in my strange disdain for the first chapter. I really wasn’t enjoying it. It might have been, also, because it wasn’t what I was expecting. I had only read Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and I had him as this comedy genius. And I’m not saying he’s not, but I was expecting a laugh-out-loud book and I wasn’t getting that. And, apart from the circumstances and my preconceived ideas, this novel is so well written. It is a really complex fantasy world, and the author explains it all with a really pretty prose, and it is probably one of the most difficult books I’ve read in English (and I don’t consider myself a newbie in this department). Yet, truth is that even if I didn’t understand what was going on sometimes, I thought it was beautiful (sort of like poetry, sometimes). The last criticism I’ll make is that the ratio of named female characters to named male characters must be of 3 out of 100, and two of those are basically naked. Every time a character appeared I was like “Will you be a girl??? and the answer was always no. But I do know that this doesn’t happen in all books of the series and there are novels with loads of badass female characters so, my frustration goes only to this book and not the Discworld series in general. So, I feel like I’ve been saying a lot of negative things so far but, truth is, as soon as the first chapter was over this novel completely had me. I read the second chapter (out of four) in a night and the rest just flew by. The relationship between the main characters is amazing, the magic and logic of this world is fascinating and I just loved it. And I’m really glad that it took a turn for me, because I really wanted to adore this and read more fantasy! And I did! ...more

I will admit that I haven't read Moby Dick, and I wasn't very drawn by the plot of this book. Ness' writing style is always on point, but the idea he wants to plant with this book didn't really land for me, and it was all a bit muddly. ...more

I appreciate the cuteness, the insecurity, personalities beyond the "gay" label and the main plot not being about discrimination and identity doubts. Though I agree those topics are important and need to be talked about, I, as biromantic, appreciate books I can relate to and are just basically cute. I'll admit it isn't an amazing book, but one like this one was long due in YA fiction....more
