Maupassant may not have the poetic penetration of Chekhov or the imagination of Hawthorne or Poe, but he is fully worthy of inclusion in the center circle of those other great 19th-century masters of the short story. These are perfect little marvels of distilled irony, disciplined prose, and melancholy humor. Tolle lege.

Sweet after showers, ambrosial air, That rollest from the gorgeous gloom Of evening over brake and bloom And meadow, slowly breathing bare The round of space, and rapt below Thro' all the dewy-tassell'd wood, And shadowing down the horned flood In ripples, fan my brows and blow The fever from my cheek, and sigh The full new life that feeds thy breath Throughout my frame, till Doubt and Death, Ill brethren, let the fancy fly From belt to belt of crimson seas On leagues of odor streaming far, To where in yonder orient star A hundred spirits whisper 'Peace.' An unbelievably magnificent achievement. Rather than a staid Victorian elegy, it is really a predecessor to the impressionistic Neo-Metaphysical poetry of Hopkins and Eliot.

Very excellent, but a few absolutely head-scratching decisions mean that I prefer the old TLH and the ELH.

I've been a pretty excoriating critic of Hemingway in the past, but this one finally forced me to admit that he was a darned talented writer. At its best, at it is consistently here, his trenchant prose is capable of bringing a scene to life in a few quick sketches as vividly and naturally as a cinematic frame, and his finest dialogues and descriptive passages strike one as perfect compositions of words. His bluntness doesn't come across as shallow here, as his use of metaphors and concrete details is wonderfully engaging. Ultimately, I found this novel most convincing in its two main war scenes—the rapid, rolling tide of helter-skelter battle caught with overwhelming immediacy. But more often than not, I found his style to be ill-suited to the romantic subject matter; even cliché-ridden. Some of the dialogues between Henry and Catherine sound like an awkward parody of young love ("I want us to be all mixed up. I don't want you to go away. I just said that. You go if you want to. But hurry right back. Why, darling, I don't live at all when I'm not with you." Eye roll.... ) So for as much as I can admire the skill and discipline that went into the crafting of the novel, the icy coldness of Hemingway (and I'm pretty sure that's not what "iceberg theory" is supposed to mean) leaves me utterly indifferent to the fates of his self-absorbed characters. I heard someone say once to think of Hemingway as a Stoic. But there's not even a hint of the unshakable divine image within, which was after all the main point of classic Stoicism. Even the religious subtexts seem utterly drained of life and interest. Hemingway's stories feel like they're populated by gray, lifeless characters living in a world that is so much more beautiful than they will ever give it credit for—characters who can't even see any mystery or wonder in the birth of a child.
