In the movie, Tom is a rather clumsy fish out of water. He doesn’t appear to posses the skill of deception although he manages to keep some very dark secrets. In the book, Tom is a much more cunning con artist. And we find out why when we learn of Tom’s childhood. I might have to read more of this series to find out how Ripley continues his life of lies. ...more

But when author Tim Curran puts his spin on things you get a chilling, look over your shoulder, and lock the doors book. It has the same flavor as the War of the Worlds movie starring Tom Cruise but Curran’s characters are more appealing and some of them are delightfully flawed. And the ending completed the book perfectly.

For some reason (age?) I had a terrible time keeping the characters straight and following the plot. However, the last 5% of the book blew me away. The author definitely has a fresh voice and I will certainly read Lynda Barry again. So I’m giving the book a strong 3 star rating. ...more

I love Gillian Flynn's work but this was a mess. I'm not a fan of short stories because, in my opinion, there is never enough detail to hold my interest. Or worse, the story is awesome but it's over too quickly. So perhaps I'm a bit jaded in my review. But perhaps not.
I wish Flynn had used her talents to write this idea into a full fledged novel. The potential is certainly there. Sicko kids make great protagonists! Oh, well. I'll just wait for her next novel.
I felt like a sick bastard myself while I was reading this. And the rating isn't for the book; it's for the author's note at the end. The story was 3 I felt like a sick bastard myself while I was reading this. And the rating isn't for the book; it's for the author's note at the end. The story was 3 stars. There was a point in the middle of the book that was a repeat of a section at the beginning. Verbatim. And I found the parenthetical expressions annoying. (Not sure why since I'm guilty of overusing parenthesis myself.) (See what I did there?)
However, the story was interesting even though a tad predictable. The splatterpunk wasn't over the top, the incest made me gag, which I expected from a book titled "Sick Bastards", and the main character retained enough humanity to make him quite likable. I'll read more of this author...more

As soon as I finished it, I downloaded another book by the author. Can't wait for the grandbabies nap time so I can start reading.
I'll never be able to play ring toss with a straight face! ...more

The story is simple; overnight most of the populace become zombies. Those who don't turn are meth addicts. Something about the combination of chemicals saves them. What a choice! - Zombie or eternal addiction? A fresh take on the genre. I wish the author could have timed his book's release by a few years when zombies were making a comeback. I have no doubt it would have been a major hit. I'm a little burned out on the monster theme but I enjoyed the book immensly (sp). And it would make a terrific movie. ...more

The book was okay but there was quite a bit I didn't enjoy - the romance between the main character and the cop took the edge off the thriller part of the book and the sex scenes were distractingly funny. Really, what woman says she enjoyed her man to the last, sweet drop? Good gawd!
I enjoyed reading this once just to see how Koontz' writing has developed over the years. ...more
