The I love cyborgs! At Death grim self is a wonderful character. The heroine is opposite as a healer and their opposing natures make for a lot of fun.
The writer does a good job with having them fall in love even in the fated mate situation.
We learn interesting things about Death's background that complicated his character in a good way.
The heroine is a bit manic and obsessed by something in her past to the point where she isn't logical and that adds an annoyance factor to the book that doesn't need to be there.
The external conflict is dumb. I have really enjoyed this series so far but Death's lack of communication (which is explained) to his brethren with a lack of flexibility on the part of the still very undeveloped Homeworld and Council part of the series is grating.
However, the lovely secondary romance saves the book though we could have spent more time with that couple.
The series is too thin on character development and world building to be great but it is fun read.

It is burning hot and about sex in a lot of ways but really character driven and each sex scene develops the heroes relationship.
This book has a size kink in it if you like that as well as a class difference and age difference but what matters most is the connection between these too.
They both have been hurt and aren't sure this super nova chemistry can be more. There is play with power dynamics as Chis should be more powerful but really Adam holds his heart and Adam needs to really believe that he can have all that he wants.
This is an intense romance that is very closed in between our leads but they both are very talented and well supported outside this bubble so that you can believe in this scorching HEA. ...more

There is clearly and erotica element to this series but the poly romances are really sweet and the kinds of aliens are intersting. Our heros are a cat like alien, a bird like alien and a human.

The reasoning of the elders in this book don't make sense nor really does what the villain does and there is sexual violence but at least its not sexualize.

I think this way the character's voice wouldn't be confused for the author's voice. But even so, this book takes place over a long stretch of time and Simon should have gotten a clue way way before he does.
Simon misgenders Mohrn, mainly in his head, a lot and until near the end of the book. In the epilogue, he has finally acculturated and fully moving away from thinking in male and female terms.
So, I completely understand why someone could not stand this book or finish it because of the nails on the chalkboard of Simon's struggle with a non binary gender and body as well as the lack of acknowledgement of intersex people, non binary people in humans. This is the future and he discusses class oppression, women's rights, racial discrimination, toxic masculinity, and homophobia with thoughtfulness so it seems a misstep in character creation as well as offensive.
Simon is a complex hero. This is a pulpy alien erotic novel with from a kind, steadfast, lonely, resilient persistent, inventive, and clever point of view of a man who has signed away five years of his life in a contract marriage to five himself and his mother and sister a better life. Again, I think the idea that he didn't read the contact and understand that his marriage would be to a someone who would need to penetrate him and has a penis as well as something like a vagina isn't fully in keeping with his personality (at least to the length of time he doesn't read) and adds drama and angst that doesn't need to be this book which is really finely written in so many ways.
I am not sure if I would call it lazy writing in a book that does such great world building and character creation but maybe writing to this genre without challenging the parts that are hurtful.
So, this is Simon's story and pov but Mohrn is really an amazing gentle giant type who really embodies the stupidity of prejudice and the cost to a society from being born Pink and not Green.
Simon's skin hunger and loneliness is powerful as his love of Mohrn and hatred of injustice. There is a nothing he won't do to protect Mohrn and some of that might be a bridge to far some readers. He is also very very clever and the mystery he solves in this book rooted in the excellent world building is divine. My favorite part of the book.
It is hard to know what to rate this book. It gave me a ton to think about in terms of character making. The scientist who modifies Simon is very clear about the misgendering and never does it feel like Simon's trouble with pronouns isn't something that doesn't need to stop but it goes on too long and doesn't feel correct to the character. So, I can't recommend it but there is something emotional compelling in this story.

The sex (there are sucking machines So, this book is not for everyone and it shouldn't be for me. There are triggers everywhere and its just strange. The sex (there are sucking machines and something that has altered our heroes to make the hyper sexual) is so constant and used as a taming element for our heroes Mark and Dale who are basically pets with who have sex with their masters and each other and.. well a lot of sex.
So, all that sex and the fact that they are egg breeders (yeah, I should be on Drunk Plots with book) eventually just numbs me to any erotic elements and the shifting sexualities and the other crazy town elements just become part of the world building.
What makes this book kinda of incredible is how moving it ends of being.
If you are hear for this kind of Alien Science Fiction Pulp, the really excellent writing of Tymber Dalton will work its magic on you.
Because, this romance is a rejection of toxic masculinity and an anti war book at its core.
It also looks at what happiness and love is an does a very compelling exploration of "otherness" and living as other.
Then, there is the end and the afterward (which is an odd way to infuse a romance but it worked) which made me cry. A lot. But its a joy, sorrow love, and life.
So, over the top? Yes. Pulpy? Beyond. Moving. Yep. ...more

There is some light BDSM in here as well but despite this being an erotic romance this book is really about the emotionial journey of each hero and their relationship.
Each hero has their own set up issues and you will root for them.
Jay is my favorite because he is so talented and really kind even as he is prickly. I wish we had spent more time with his family.

However, Zane is sending Lucas really crossing the line gifts for someone who doesn't know the other well. HR nightmare. I am practical enough to think about that the whole time lol.
Interestingly the items are because Zane want to be dominated by Lucas which is way less creepy than the other way around but in BDSM relationship much more communication is needed.
There are some funny moments though Lucas characterization as nerdy doesn't fully deliver and Zane is all over the map in terms of personality.
