I first read Lance Carbuncle about 8 years ago when searching for a book a for little ole book club in Goliad, Texas that consisted of a elementary school teacher, a special ed diagnostics, a PhD professor at an university, a church secretary, and myself. I chose Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked, and Spewed, for two basic reasons, the title and the pen name. How could I not love his writing? This preamble is to further express my adoration for Lance's style of writing. I have read all of his books and I have to say that I love The Unmentionables most of all. His writing is just getting better. When people ask what genre his book is I have to group him with Chuck Palahniuk, Kurt Vonnegut, and Monica Drake, to name a few, which I fondly label "what the f¢%& was that about" genre or "that was awesome". In closing, I highly recommend this book and to let you all know, the church secretary has become one of the best friends I've ever known and I wish you could have seen how excited she was when I gave her a signed copy of Sloughing Off the Rot for her birthday. Keep books a coming!...more

I know part of why I procrastinated reading this book was in part because of the never-ending description of the clown information. Part was the never-ending drama that could have been avoided by telling people what that one serious thing going on with the protagonist and I get that it is THAT genre but it came across as too formulaic-ly written. On a deeper note, the simple metaphor about people using "costumes" to hide behind was adequately covered and the protagonist's epiphany was so welcomed that it made it a not so bad, but okay book. As much as I like Chuck Palahniuk and thought it was worth reading because of his high praise, I have to say I think he was doing an old friend a favor or we simply don't have in common reading likes. I know, it happens....more

This is the second Nursery Crime I've had the pleasure of reading. The quirky style and reiteration of beloved characters of tales, folklore, myth, and childhood staples have grown up and, for the most part, assimilated into a modern-day world, unbeknownst to some of their fictional roles until it is often times too late. An easy and entertaining book that can put a smile on your face. Don't expect literary fiction for this four star. It's four star for what it is, fun....more

Kurt Vonnegut's writing is Kurt Vonnegut's writing style. It can be described in various ways but it is quintessentially his own. So, while I read and know there are certain twists and sidelines that are expected, it still has that quality of being not what you expected. Another good story with an unorthodox ending that somehow leaves me satisfied. What else could I ask for in a book?...more

I have heard about the under bridge communities in Florida before and although I am repelled by pedophiles, I also do not like that they are forced to live under bridges due to the stipulations on the sentences. There has to be another solution.
I understand that the imaginative ramblings where to give the reader a better view into the mind of an individual but they just carried on a bit too long for me in most instances. This is the only reason I gave the book 3 instead of 4 stars.
Nicely written in depth and multi-dimensional representations of characters and interesting story....more

While the author admittedly tells us, the reader, that this was a book he wrote for himself never expecting it to claim any notoriety, I'm amazed at what people sometimes consider worth reading or turning into a movie (which I haven't seen yet). This book had some really good parts, some interesting, some boring, and more than it's share of WTF, and not in a good way. I guess at least if it ever comes up in conversation I can say, "Oh, I read that", but to be completely honest I would like some "soy sauce" so I could go back in time and spend that time reading another book....more

This book was recommended by a friend a few years ago. I was told it U like Kurt Vonegut, then I would like Carl Hiaasen. While I understand why they would think so I would probably file it in different folder. Having said that I really liked this book. As whacked out as the collection of characters are they are none the less disgustingly, humorously, unbelievably real. A crazy cacophony of personalities and branching stories so masterly woven in to one that makes sense and has some very satisfying outcomes in the most unexpected ways. My only dissatisfaction was learning that it was a series book and there are volumes that come before. Stand alone, the protagonist and his supporting cast are well developed but one of the most interesting characters was missing some information and now I know why. I see book 1 in my not so distant future....more
