After having read this author before and loving her work, I didn’t think she could get any better!!! This was brilliant!! I absolutely loved everything about this story. Well written, excellent world building but her characters are rich and relatable.
It’s a deeply emotional read dealing with a 13th child and her godfather, basically the god of death are entwined throughout her life. He gives her gifts over life and death thst causes grief and conflict in their tumultuous, yet loving relationship.
I’ve come to the third and final book in this series and what an awesome conclusion! Way to stick the landing of this unique seafaring fantasy.
If you I’ve come to the third and final book in this series and what an awesome conclusion! Way to stick the landing of this unique seafaring fantasy.
If you like strong, complicated characters, pirates, all things at sea, sea dragons, political backstabbing and swashbuckling for all, this is your series.
This world is most unique where most it takes place on ships. The language of the sea is even unique like deckchilder, deckkeeper or the captain is called a Shipwife and the boat referred to as him instead of she. And you have this amazing bird like creature called Guillaime whom I love ❤️. A gullaime powers the sails using only their breath to create the strongest winds and they are magical especially ours. Most characters are complex, many shades of gray who you experience grow and become better through their fierce loyalty to Jeron and his ship wife Meas.
It’s a tale of adventure, violence, what it means to be loyal and heartbreaking. Highly recommend ...more

I mean book 2 breaks you in half! We sail onward into the world of the Tide Child trilogy with so much happening and going on, it did take me awhile to digest it all. The world building is unique as I are the slow buildup of characters and relationships. It’s easy to get lost in this place and not come up for air often.
I would recommend taking time with these books and not rushing them as they are heavily detailed and rich and yet continues to move the story forward. Nice balance.

This one did take minute to get fully going but once it did, it was unputdownable. You care rather deeply for these characters and the power that draws them together. I literally picked this one up for the cover, the title and the time travel elements and it paid off. I was completely swept away.
However, the timelines and explanations were a bit wonky and over my head at times....more

What a fantastic book to get lost into and the main character is someone you can really pull for and care for. He builds this story layer by layer where you cannot tell who is the good guy and who is not either such great care. It feels like the most exciting chess match ever!

This gives a good spin on that genre if you love spooky forest stories.

How could the author top that first book so well!! This one is darker, has even more atmosphere and goes places I never saw coming. It has mystery, violence, romance and well built characters that you will not soon forget. I absolutely love the world building here and the tone of the story. A lot of YA authors will do fantasy and put modern day language into their story which completely takes me out of the story . This one writes a good, rich story without insulting older YA audience without writing “down to them being bold enough to go dark right to the edge of it just enough before crossing over to adult lit. Brava!!
I loved getting lost in this tale of deception, love and betrayal. I can only hope there will be a follow up soon!!

I know this book has gotten incredible buzz and I can honestly see why. It’s warm and fuzzy and full of sweet and positive messages, which is all well and good. However, I found this to be a bit boring and bland. The characters were not interesting at all, the coffee shop sounded like Starbucks, right down to the cups with names on them and no one had a good, meaty backstory.
It’s somewhat simple and predictable and considering what I thought was going to be a fast read, I found myself putting it down and not excited about picking it back up. So interesting idea, execution, not so much....more

The tale continues with Vasya and the winter-king with many layers of deep storytelling and emotions. It may be cold and harsh but winter never looked and felt more warm.

I’ve read Stephen King for over 40 years and have been a Constant Reader from a teen so I’m well versed in his epic books. I super looked forward to his diving into fantasy once again since The Talisman is one of my all time favorites of his, but this didn’t hit the mark the way that one did.
King is extremely readable and is a master of both building characters and their relationships. I tend to never forget certain characters he’s created over the years. The beginning of this book is strong in development and takes quite awhile before it hits anything like fantasy. By the time the fantasy portion hits, the story actually stalls out for me. It’s all so out of balance with the wonderful relationship building and slice of life for 17 year old Charlie Reade and Mr. Bowditch and his dog Radar. I loved all those parts. Finding all the dark surrounding Mr. Bowditch and the love that was building between Charlie and Radar was compelling and warm. However once we get passed that, about 60% into the book, we start learning the secrets, come to the boy and his dog’s quest into another world, it quickly loses it’s steam. I never get as immersed into this world or it’s characters the way I did in the beginning. I needed more Radar as well.
It’s pretty cool how King weaves the dark fairy tales of Grimm, the dark magic of Bradbury and the even darker lore of Lovecraft, but the journey through it all weakened over time.

I must say I enjoyed the first 3 the most. Blood and Powder series strengths are in the first 2 books going head on into this world that I love, however this last book felt like it was off a bit for me. It seemed like it lacked the magic of the first two and I mean literally. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the hell out of it, but wasn’t as excited to pick it up as much.
For me, I needed more of Bo and Nila. I know this wasn’t their story, but for some reason Styke, Vlora, Olem and Michel couldn’t hold me the way those other folks could.
Just have to mention that this author creates some of the strongest women I’ve read in fantasy in awhile. Hats off!!!
Overall, I have loved these books and look forward to reading more from this author....more

I’m super happy my old characters are back and with the introduction of new, fun ones to learn about. The author has a way of making these characters just come alive in a way that I haven’t had since game of thrones.

There the “witch finds the baby always saddened by the people who do this and takes to baby to a surrounding city to be raised and loved, while the people of the Pectorate believe the baby has been killed by the witch.
This book was sloooowwww! It’s supposed to be for middle grade kids and am looking at this from their perspective. I personally wasn’t looking forward to listening to it and found myself drifting off. The narrator was awful and so I thought that might be it. But this story had a drag to it that I can’t put my finger on exactly. The writing was lovely, the lessons in the book were wonderful. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t not like it, I did, I just didn’t love it. I don’t feel this is a great book to introduce kids to the world of fantasy reading it may actually be a turnoff with the pacing being as it is.
I’d go for Earthsea series by Ursula Le Gruinn over the this....more

These are not high action, page turning thrilling books, but are very well thought out epic tales of people and worlds that you just don’t want to leave!!! I am still in awe of the thought of ships being alive with personalities especially Paragon, the mad ship. I’m looking forward to learning more about his history and what happened to him.

If you enjoy nautical tales, pirates and family sagas, pick this one up fast. Imagine a world where ships become a living being and sail only for the families it is bonded with. They have personalities and feelings and yes can turn and become mad and dangerous as well. Learn about this wonderfully dark world as you follow the Vestrit family on their journey through the complex world they try to navigate and set things right.

While I loved the sI have finally completed this huge tome of a trilogy! I have enjoyed Fitz, Nighteyes and Fool tremendously and they will be missed.
While I loved the series as a whole, I felt the pacing of the last book was a bit of a slog in places. It totally could have been scaled back. I felt there was way too much repetition is several places which didn’t feel like it added to the story but was a way to make it longer and more epic in scope? Not sure, but I would have edited the crap out of it and got to it. The looooooonnnnng road to the Elderlings need not have been so daunting unless it was filled with stops that added value and more history rather than more repeating of the same.
The pacing was so uneven as we go on this intensely long journey and then the ending, which we are all waiting for, feels cut short and hurried. I needed more! I needed to feel more satisfied than I did.
Other than these gripes, the story as a whole was wonderful, the prose was beautiful. This is what it would be like if Dickens wrong epic fantasy. This is probably the most “literary fantasy Ive ever read and would put it up there with “classic. Well done. I will read more Robin Hobb. Hats off!...more

Highly accessible writing, first person narrative, ebbs and flows easily. Someone said it’s what Dickens would have written had he picked a different genre and I would agree with that.
Oh these characters! A wonderful cast of people to love or not, throughout. I won’t bog the review down with the plot only that it’s easy to get lost in the world she has built here. My only grumble is its a bit light on the magic portion. We have the Wit, ability to connect with animals as if you are one, the Skill, to get into another head to direct them and the mysterious enemy off shores making villages into humans without emotions or ability to love. Some interesting concepts that I think book one only slight dives into.
