It was interesting, for lack of a better word, to see how an author chooses to flesh out a story where you already know the bare bones of what happened. All in all, I thought she did a good job and this was a worthy addition to the series.
I had to pause reading after the first chapter or two, though, to go skim-read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and remind myself of names and its plot details. It helped a lot....more

I’ve read 2 or 3 other Matt Haig books and really liked them, but this one was awful. There’s no punctuation except for periods, it reads like a teen or tween’s text messages, and I realized after a week or two of not touching it that I didn’t want to finish it, partially because I didn’t want to see how faithful it is to the original Hamlet and who all dies.
Edited to add: I skimmed parts of the end and then the last 10-20 pages, and WTH was that?! Glad I didn’t bother fully reading it all!
Better off skipping this one and picking another Matt Haig book instead....more

There’s a LOT going on in this book Jewish customs, Jewish death traditions, trans stuff, family stuff, queer life, crazy family drama, death, ghosts, anxiety, grief (and a rescue dog!) but in the end, it all works and has a deep heart. Much more soul and depth than most cisgender rom-coms, and Ezra felt wonderfully full-dimensional. Yay for actually reading an impulse buy from Powell’s (curse/bless those display tables at the entrance!) within a few days of purchasing it, yay for being on sale, and yay for being a fun distraction in a week when I was laid off from my job. ...more
