This is just such a well written (and well translated) story that is a PERFECT combination of fun, silly and wholesome with a found family/gang of misfit characters coming together, a cute, adorable romance alongside an interesting world, intense plot, and some VERY SPICY smut scenes (not in this volume, but I read some from the fan translation lolll)

I've never read a Sapphic omegaverse before but I LOVEDDD this - I definitely need to pick up more! We follow such interesting, complex and lovable characters in this story - although I loved the romance, I'd say just the character dev overall was great. I ADORED Cleo and as someone with OCD/GAD I think her representation of both of those disorders was VERY well done. I also really loved the character Kael and honestly I just really enjoyed Cleo's relationships with everyone in this story.
The world building is also really interesting - I personally am not a huge fan of super complex worlds and prefer just kind of being thrown into a story and given time to figure it out myself (I hate nothing more than lengthy paragraphs/pages of world building - that's the easiest way for me to start skimming lol) so I liked that we were slowly introduced to this world over time
Overall I really REALLY loved this book!!

WOW this book was a ride. I was tandem reading the novel and the manhwa until I caught up to the manhwa (as of Feb 2025) and then I just finished with the novel. But wow wow WOW this story is absolutely insane, the characters are so incredibly complex and I feel like the author did an AMAZING job with all of them.
Our mc was so complex and fought so many demons internally and externally and I think his growth as a person and mental health wise was incredibly realistic - it's not always a forward streak. Sometimes you take steps back, and sometimes you do things that aren't in your best interest. It was also fascinating watching him realize what would be CORRECT for him vs what he WANTED.
The emperor was absolutely insane yet I found myself absolutely fascinated by him. I think the depiction of him was strangely amazing - at the climax of the story when he was truly CRAZY I absolutely hated him but also couldn't help thinking about how amazingly his insanity was written. His character development (can you call it that?) was also very realistic. One of my least fave things is when a tsundere/evil character suddenly "turns good" - which doesn't happen here. He is still a terrible person right up to the end, but the perception is just changed slightly.
The relationships were so, SO complex and well written. I was honestly wondering about everyone's motives, I was going back and forth about who I liked/hated and who I was rooting for, and honestly it's been a while since I was so torn about a romance.
Also, I will say, I do not have basically any trigger warnings for myself, but this book had SEVERAL moments that were genuinely so, SO uncomfortable and horrifying - I can't remember the last time I needed to take a break from reading because of how uncomfortable I was.
Overall, this story is just WOW I will definitely not be forgetting about this story or these characters for a long time

This was a really fun first volume! I knew kind of nothing going into this besides that its a zombie apocalypse and I really liked this author's other book "Profundis." It was a bit repetitive of the oh no zombies, find somewhere to hide, there are people there, oh no zombies, run, find somewhere new to hide, there are people, oh no- which I know is most zombie stories, but this one happening 3 times in 200 pages was a bit much
There's also definitely something else cooking in the background here... I feel like something bigger is coming in upcoming volumes and I'm so excited to continue!!...more

I REALLY liked this - but I did have a few too many problems to be able to say "loved."
First, the positives - this book has AMAZING characters. Xu Ze and Lu Heyang are so incredibly real, they feel like actual people rather than just characters on the page. I am so, so attached to them and loved spending so much time with them. Their relationship and dynamics are also just so perfect - the chemistry between them is incredible and it had me blushing and kicking my feet every time they interacted (which was basically 900 pages out of 1,000).
I really loved how Xu Ze and Lu Heyang (and all of the characters tbh) didn't fit into archetypes or stereotypes - again, they all felt so REAL. I loved that Xu Ze and Lu Heyang honestly had similar personalities, I'm a bit sick of the opposites attract/grumpyXsunshine dynamic we have in EVERY book nowadays. I liked reading about two quiet boys <3
The story was also interesting - tbh this isn't a story I feel like I should have liked (i'm not a big fan of stories of rich people, or poorXrich couples, or gangs/mafia/anything with organized violence) but I found myself lost in the story because it was a perfect balance (FOR ME) of romance vs these plot lines. I liked how we didn't get TOO into things that it became too much plot, but enough to keep the story moving and interesting enough.
Now, the negatives are mostly about the omegaverse elements of this story because I'd like to call myself an expert on the subject lol I'm a HUGE fan of non-traditional omegaverse, so an alphaXalpha non-trad omegaverse was absolutely up my alley but... there were so many things I just didn't love - I felt like the author almost regretted writing alphaXalpha half way through and decided to basically just treat Xu Ze as an omega (like, why was he nesting? why did we have a whole (view spoiler)[pregnancy scare??? (hide spoiler)], why did he have "ruts" that seemed to be exactly the same as omega's heats?) I really wish she leaned more into the alphaXalpha dynamic - the fact that we never saw them fight was a tragedy to me - I feel like this story could have just not been an omegaverse and it would have basically been the same story - I only was reminded of the fact that this was a/b/o when they mentioned 'alpha' or the pheromone bracelets but even all of that was VERY minor - going off of the last two points, I felt like the author only wrote this as omegaverse/alphaXalpha to be able to write a story about homophobia because if you got rid of the omegaverse then it really is just a normal story of two guys dealing with hiding a relationship due to judgmental, homophobic parents.
The only other negative I had was the middle gets quite boring - theres a solid 250 pages I felt were very repetitive/could have been cut. I can overlook that in danmei a lot, but 250 pages was a LONG time to feel bored
But, overall, the positives far outweighed the negatives, and I really REALLY liked this story. but i'm even more excited for book 2!! I feel like I hear about book 2 ALL THE TIME and could tell half way through this story that the author really just wanted to write about our book 2 couple lol (which I can understand, I did that with my fantasy series too), so I'll be diving right into that one next!!...more

I found the main characters incredibly boring
I didn't like the relationship - it was VERY old school yaoi/bl where the top is like "I know what's best for you" and basically just did whatever he wanted without actually thinking about the other guy (who was also a total pushover and didn't do ANYTHING)
And I felt like the author didn't really know where she was going with it so the ending felt SO random and out of place

I just simply couldn't stop - this book is like a train wreck you just can't look away from. This book is DARK and its crazy and this author is insane and belongs in an institute but I also belong right there next to her cause I ate this shit UP
Yugeon and Shinjae are so fucking toxic and horrible together and everyone else is absolutely awful but I also need them to be happy for my mental health <3
