Even though this isn't normally the type I would choose for the treadmill (I tend toward celebrity biographies that I don't need to think too much about), I heard about the audio version of this, recorded by Nick Offerman, David Sedaris, Saunders himself and a ton of other celebrities and I couldn't resist....and let me tell you that I am LOVING it so far.
***So, as stated above, this was my treadmill book. I had never looked at the table of contents when I stopped going to that gym and stopped listening to the book and most audiobooks and switched to podcasts so I could listen along with my husband. He is.GASP. not much of a reader. I give him a book each Christmas. Sometimes it takes him years to finish one. Years. This year I gave him one with the caveat that he had to finish it this year. Clearly I should have done this before because he was done by February. To this day I am not sure how I married a man who doesn’t love to read, but he’s all kinds of wonderful in many other ways.
But I digress.
Had I known I was so close to finishing I would have just knocked it out, but I had no idea. I was looking at my “currently reading list the other day and decided to get a couple of things off of it, so I abandoned one and deuces to finish this one. Pressed play (I enjoyed the book so much I remembered what was going on right where I left off.SEVEN YEARS AGO) and was done in about forty-five minutes. Cried.
My fellow readers, I know this book has been out for awhile (SEVEN YEARS!) and it won’t be to everyone’s taste, but the fact that I picked it up without missing a beat after all that time and that it made me cry.tears of…mix d joy and sadness, well, if you’ve ever considered it I highly recommend. And please consider the audio version. It has something like 116 different voices with Nick Offerman, David Sedaris and the author in the three lead roles. It. Is. Wonderful. ...more

Carrie Fisher you were gone much too soon. It's so hard to believe that the vibrant voice from this audiobook is now gone from this earth.
So, Fisher wrote any number of autobiographical books; this one is primarily about the few months of filming "Star Wars," but really about her affair with Harrison Ford. She was nineteen, he was much older, and married. She was in the throes of first love, he was in an unhappy marriage. I could have done without the long ramblings from her journals, and she spoke as if only she, Harrison and she were in the movie, but otherwise she was honest about herself, her foibles and about those of others (which may have gotten her into trouble from time to time, although so much time had passed between the events of this book and now, nearly forty years, I'm not sure how much people minded....except perhaps the subject himself, and I don't know that he's spoken publicly). Interesting. ...more

LOVED portions of this book - her honesty is amazing and she seems to hold nothing back (even when you wish she might). It was quite long but I never got tired of hearing her voice and she has amazing stories for one who is still at the beginning of what, I hope, will be along career. She's so body-positive and supportive of females I hope that many younger women read this book and get something from it. ...more

*Well, this was definitely not up to the same standard as The Royal We, but it was intended to be no more than a YA trifle and that's exactly what it was. Teenage Molly Dix's mother dies and she learns that her father is matinee idol Brick Berlin, so instead of living with her grandparents, whom she's known all her life, she departs Indiana to live with Berlin and his teenage daughter Brooke who hates Molly on sight. No real surprises here - lots of brand names, but none of the spirit of the other book. I won't be in any hurry to read the one sequel. ...more

This was one of my treadmill books - a book on tape that I'm only allowed to listen to while I'm exercising, which is why it took me so long to finish it and it was perfect for that purpose and lots of fun besides. It's a loose retelling of the Prince William/Kate Middleton story, only the "Kate" here is Rebecca, "Bex" Porter, an American exchange student and it's told from her perspective. She meets her prince at Oxford and goes through many trials and tribulations with him and her twin sister Lacey who, naturally, is attracted to the Prince Harry character - all of which seemed fairly realistic (I swear!) and the book was enjoyable and fun, with lots of well-drawn secondary characters and a subplot that actually made me tear up once or twice. Such a pleasant surprise and much more than I expected. I liked this one so much I'm worried about what I'll find next that I could possible enjoy as much. Treadmills aren't fun. ...more

Baseball isn'tBought this as a gift for my husband years ago, and on a ride back from Asheville we had no iPod so we listened to it straight through. Baseball isn't my all-time favorite subject but there are some really great stories and poetry here - the stand outs for me were "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu" by John Updike which recounts Updike's attendance at Ted Williams's final game and "The Thrill of the Grass," a short story by W.P. Kinsella. ...more

If you've heard anything about this, you know it's a fictionalized version of the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes story and though I thought the reader made the Rob Mars/Cruise character sound a little....slow, I got used to it and, for what it was, it was a decent book, though perhaps giving a little too much credit to the real-life Lizzie Pepper/Holmes character (I'm guessing her own motives were a little more calculated than Lizzie's are, but I suppose the Liftin needed to make her likable). "One Cell" stands in for Scientology, but it's on a bit of a smaller scale. Anyway, perfect book for the treadmill - enough to keep me walking away, anyway. ...more
