The writing of this short novel was impeccable. Every word was dripping with sadness and foreshadowing, which such a work of art considering the brevity of this novel. So, considering the great writing why didn't I enjoy this more? I would say it came down to the magical realism aspect. I struggled with the whole idea of sleeping with a crane and the whole concept made me feel off kilter. Perhaps, this was intentional.

It just didn't feel genuine to me and I wish the romance aspect was a little more fleshed out.

3.5 stars This was a fun read. I really enjoyed the complex world the author built and the characters were intriguing. I also appreciated the level of 3.5 stars This was a fun read. I really enjoyed the complex world the author built and the characters were intriguing. I also appreciated the level of spiciness of the romantic scenes. I did not realize before reading other reviews that this book takes place in a world that was already conceived in other books. As such, it can be complex and one of the things I didn't care for was the repetitive nature of explaining the nuances of the world. However, this may be attributed to the complexity of the world.

Frankly, I found this book quite boring and the plot twist at the end was way to convenient and was not worth the all boring build up. When you are telling me what characters ate for breakfast, lunch and dinner there is too much filler!

What is really interesting is that one of the Frederick sisters is a special needs adult. I requested this arc as it compared itself to Elinor Oliphant, a book I absolutely adored. Unfortunately, it did not live up to Elinor Oliphant. Although both books have overburdened, somewhat morose characters I did not connect as deeply with this MC. Maybe because I did not connect with the characters the long interludes into the past did nothing to enhance the story and in fact made it drag a bit.

Backman writes compelling characters that make even a non-hockey fan enjoy hockey. He evokes such beautiful emotions that I did not know I was capable of feeling. That being said this book was too damn long. Forgive me fans, but did we really need a third Beartown book with almost 700 pages? I'm burnt out from this read.

Considering this is a witchy romance, I wish there was more magic and more romance. The romance to me felt forced, one minute they hate each other, and the next they are in love. I love fantasy, and magical novels for world-building and fantastical elements. This book had very little of both.
What this book does well is it accurately conveys what it is like to live with anxiety. Overall, a solid 3-star read.

As a mother myself, I found the main character Vera relatable. After I finished this book I find I am still reflecting on some of the situations. Overall, I would recommend this book, especially to mothers.
